Hello Guys, I just bought a 1974 F250 4x4 with a 360 engine. I am new to the 4x4 world and have some questions.
My truck didn't come with the right shift **** for the transfer case, So I have no Idea what i'm in, such as low 4x4 High anything. Can someone tell me the shift Diagram or something for this thing?
Also I have a leaky oil pan, I have called around to junk yards, went to 5 junk yards around my house and can't find a replacement. I also called ford and they said there isn't one in any ford dealership in the U.S. I'm looking for the oil pan with the rear sump, Anyone know where I can get one?
I'm trying to bring my truck back to life as it's been sitting for 5 years, so i'll have more questions as I go along.
Thanks chris.
ebay is a great place for parts like that or even the classifieds here on this site... chances are pretty good your shift pattern for the transfercase is as follows
4 lo
neutral
2 high
4 high
hope that helps some... best of luck and congratulations!!!
just caught the next post.. reminded me of how FE's tend to leak around the manifold... she may have a leak along the back edge and be running down he block also...

Are you sure the oil pan needs replaced? Usually the pan gasket or the rear crank seal is the problem. Then the pan can be removed, cleaned and reused.
if you have manual locking hubs it is the part time case with
4low
N
2hi
4hi
but if you have caps on in the center of the front wheels then you have a full time and it is not a straight back pull like the part time one it is like this
Yeah I got manual locking hubs, Thanks for the info.
As for the oil pan I guess the guy who had it before me hits some rocks, because it's all bent. It left an indent next to where the dip stick goes in and thats where it leaks from.
My last resort is to take the pan off, try to bend it back and weld where the oil comes out from.
I just want a new one with no dents.
New question does anyone know how to change freeze plugs aka expansion plugs?
I only got one that leaks next to the starter. Thanks.
you can try and drill and tap it, then run a bolt into the tapped hole and try to pry it out of the block, then hammer a new one into place- using a socket that fits squarely inside the recess of the plug.. that's worked for me in the past, although i've never tried it on an engine still in the truck..
Got the old plug out, Used a screwdriver to poke a hole in it. Tried to take it out, it just didn't want to come out. Hit it with a hammer, plug went inside of engine, got some metal shears, cut the plug into two, and then pulled it out.
Got the new plug, but because the engine was tilted i couldn't get the new one in.
I didn't want to do it, but i ended up using one of those expanding plugs.
Now I got a new problem, I changed the cooling system and now it leaks from the water pump I'm guessing. I changed the hoses, Thermostat, Water outlet, the freeze plug, and I guess from the pressure the pump leaks too.
Everytime I fix something on this thing, something else breaks or leaks.
so far i have changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor, Fuel pump, fuel filter.
I found one on ebay, I didnt tell you guys just in case you wanted one to. But anyways i work nights so waking up at 10:30am to bid was hard for me. So I rested my eyes, fell alseep and didn't even bid on the thing. some guy got it for only 50 bucks. Here it is http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...A112&sasel=&id=
Don't give up. They are not like the Chev trucks. I have had one of the 74s since 1984 and it is still a strong truck. I have put over 300,000 mi on that old 4X4 and it still runs well. I had it completly gone over (body and paint) and it looks and runs like new. I run a 428 cj set up for torque rather than the original 360 but that's not requred.
For original parts, go down to Ford and get their PN. Go home and call Carpenter at 1-800-476-9653. They are buying up a lot of the original stamping dies from Ford and actualy making the parts.
I priced out a short block 428 at checkers, they want $1,200 dollars with a core return. probably a good starting point if you need a motor, oops engine.
