hello all, i have 93 4.0 v6 2wd stick,my truc well start right up run fine 4 about 20 min and then just shut down no spark, had everthing checked plus a lot of parts i did not need,icm-pmc-coilpack-fuel filter-fuelpump working, fuel pressure ok, after setting 5-10 min will start up run like new,oh yes 107,000 miles on her, anyhow today i found a crack in the gas tank filler neck and was
told if it was sucking air it will shut down the elec to the coil, is that true?
yes 2-3 times no codes,no cel, itjust stops turns over just no spark,5-10min later starts up runs fine 10-20min shuts off 0 spark. thanks for your reply
Well lets narrow the situation down to a possible problem...
Sounds to me like once your truck goes to closed loop mode (where the truck is at normal operating temp... normally obtained after 5-10 minutes, depending on the outside temperature, and all the sensors are taking action), that your ECM or even the DIS pack could be failing, causing it not to spark.
I would find the Coolant temperature sensor (not sure where it's located on the 4.0.... but its the one that has 3 wires going to it, not the single wire temp sensor), and unplug it and see what happens. With that sensor being unplugged, the computer will not know that the truck is actually coming to normal operating temp, thus it will stay in "open loop" mode, where a minimal amount of sensors are in use. Note that the truck will run a little richer than usual because the computer will think its always cold.
I would check around and see if anyone could test your DIS (Distributorless Ingition System) computer pack, and maybe even the ECU. I have a feeling its the DIS, I've seen them do some crazy things.
Thanks for your reply handman,i would like to say i just moved here from lexington ohio, but anyhow i have put a new coilpack on last sat, icm, new computer, fuel filter, fuel pressure checked, fuel pump is working fine, ill give it a try as soon as its daylight, and let you know what happens. if you can think of anything else let me know, and thanks again.........
Your crank sensor (VRS) in Ford vernacular should give an output signal of 0.4 -0.6 VAC measured at EDIS module pins 5 and 6 disconnected. Test when engine won't start. Resistance thru the vrs should be 500-600 ohms.
