nope. the sm oils have nothing in them to protect older engines. the sm oils are better in all ways except in protecting the cam. if you could boost the ZDDP you would have one hell of an oil. valvoline makes the best right now called valvoline synpower oil treatment. will boost ZDDP 120 ppm per ounce. it runs about 5.00 a bottle.

I was reading the back of a bottle of napa premium oil at the shops today and it said API SM but below said compatible with all previous API ratings and then listed a bunch of other classes. So in other words according to what is going on here, they are lying? What am I supposed to do when winter comes around and I need 5W-30 for my engine?

it probably just said "compatible" on the bottle. meaning you can mix it with any other grade.

The VR-1 is listed on Valvoline's site as SAE 30, 40, 50, and 50, as well as 10w30 and 20w50. Finding a store that sells it may be the problem.

Big Lots has CD-2 Street Legal High Performance Oil Boost for $1.99 a bottle with 4500 ppm zddp. Half a bottle should do it and it is half to a third the thickness of the Synpower Oil Treatment.

Also Walmart sells Powerservice Diesel Lube Oil Extender or something like that which I believe was about mid 4000s ppm zddp also (VOA on Bobistheoilguy).

i checked kragen today the VR-1 was 3.89 for a quart. i think the price is out of line for whats in the bottle.

You are right. The MSDS for 10w30 looks like it is mostly Group I.

Anybody have any advice as far as finding a 5W-30 for winter time? I know in summer I can run a diesel oil like Rotella-T, but what about winter? Do they make a 5W-30? Also, are the diesel oils available in a synthetic blend? I like the idea of a little bit more protection for the extreme hot and cold, but since my inline six is up there in years I don't want to pour in full synthetic and watch all the pin holes spurt oil everywhere.

why not just use the rotella year round? they have 10w30, never seen a 5w30 rotella... they do make 5w40, but thats a synthetic. Rotella is a great oil!

I cant just use the Rotella-T becuase my inline six can't handle the 10w-30 in the winter, it just doesnt run right, but the 5w-30 makes is purr.

theres a 5w20 diesel weight?? ive never seen or heard of this. very interesting!

Not that I doubt anybody...

But I'd like to see a link to this 5w30 and 5w20 diesel rated oil.

What I have been told and read is that the zinc poisons the catalytic convertors.

Diesel rated 5w-20? Yepper, and here it is:

Did any body state that it had to be CI-4+? Yeah, I know, it's splittin' hairs but it is diesel rated. Other brands fall into the same catagory in that they are diesel rated, just not a current diesel rating.
