I have a 1988 f-150 w/300 5speed and dual tanks, I hear a loud hum which seems to be coming from under the truck drivers side, it doesn't matter which tank I am using but it is so loud I can clearly hear it in the cab. Is this the fuel pump and does the noise mean its going bad? The truck runs fine I have put $2000.00 into the truck in the last week(radiator and rebuilt front end) and really don't want to spend any more but I am taking an 800 mile round trip next week with it and don't want to breakdown. (It is separate from the hum I hear when I first turn the key) Thanks
I've got the same noise on my '87 (302, auto). My pump is new and it has made the noise since I put it on. It gets louder after one tank has been drained, then quiets a bit when I switch to the other tank.
You should be able to hear the pump even when it's working correctly...but one that changes sound and becomes louder is sometimes an indication that it's about to go.
Mine changed it's sound and got noticeably louder, died within 50 miles.
Your truck has 3 pumps, two in the tank and one on the frame rail.
You can check the fuel pressure from the schrader valve on the fuel rail (mounted ontop of engine) to see if there is any indication of it being weak in it's ability to supply enough pressure.
Sounds to me like you're just noticing the sound of what it's normally like...
Yeah, mines pretty loud too. When I turn the key over, (right before the starting position) I get a loud bzzzzzzzzzzzttt. After I start up I can hear it still, but its quieter. Gets kinda annoying. The pump inside the tank is only about a year old, but the one outside the tank is probobly years older. I'm not sure which one is making the noise, Im guessing the outside one.
my truck does it, i test drove a ton of them that did it when i was truck shoping. i'd say its safe to asume that the buzzing is normal, everyone of them makes the buzz noise when you turn the key, and they've all got the annoying buzz while there running.
mine cant be heard over the exhaust and radio, so it dont bug me anymore
Thanks guys,I guess I'm forgetting that it was a truck built in 1988 and i've been driving a 2001 Impala for the last 5 yrs (although I have to say I like the truck better)
If they get louder all of a sudden, or make no noise at all, be concerned. Otherwise, you're fine. Electric pumps are loud, Ford chose whining noise over the clunking of some others....
