hey guys i have another stray windstar question. my wife's 99 windstar lost most of its powersteering fluid. i'm not sure of the time frame from full to empty.probably a slow loss over several months.. she brought it to my attention when it was squealing during turns. i looked in the resevior and didn't see a thing.although it did look wet. i put in what i had in the garage,(a pint i guess) and all went back to normal. whats the chances the pump is damaged? any common powersteering pump leaks on these? we have about 65 thousand miles on the odometer. i looked around for leaks, but didn't see anything. none dripped on the driveway either..? i figure i'll crawl under it when the weather warms up a bit and get a better look. any ideas? thanks, rick
BTW. Is the pump of aero the same ore different? I have powerstereeng problemes too. Reservouar is full of foam. The fluid "boils"! ZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!! What can it be?
hey racer guy, thanks for the info. the pump is still quiet, and behaving normally..whew...the pump is way in the back on the left hand side facing the engine. so i'll have to crawl under there, or take off the passenger tire to eyeball it. . its snowing here in ohio, but not as bad as new york!! i'll wait till tuesday to check it.
pablo, about the boiling fluid, that is strange. is the fluid contaminated, or old?...there is a web site to ask ford stuff. its www.customersaskford.com you may wanna shoot that by them. i'm not sure what the boiling point of powersteering fluid is. i guess its the same as tranny fluid, so i don't think it should ever boil... it may smell burnt if it has deposits in it, dirt etc...changed it lately? the windstar pump does look remarkably like the one on the 91 aerostar i had., if i remember correctly on the aerostar its on the front right hand side as you face the engine, no where near the exhaust manifold of pipes which might heat it up,....let us know if you figure that one out.! rick
rick,
if your pump shaft seal is still good, do a drain and flush out the pump return line...put a couple qts thru the system filling the reservior and draining out the return line coming from the rack system...really helps clean the pwr steering system up and adds to life...don't run long empty.... turn engine on and off to pump out in short spells filling in between
