1990 front axle U-joint

I started a thread trying to figure out how to remove the hub and axle assembly in order to change one of my U-joints. Great response, many thanks, but before I do that, do I have to remove the axle? Can I replace the U-joint without removing the axle?

I can see it, I can move it, I can feel that it is shot. If there is a way, how do I remove the caps that cover the snap rings without wrecking anything, and is this possible?

It is the outside joint on the passenger side, if that means anything.

Thanks in advance, this forum has already saved me big $$$$$$$$$$$$.

Wow, I guess you could try but why make the process more difficult? Honestly, removing the axle will be less difficult than trying to replace the U-joint with it in place.

I had to use my 20 ton press to press the ujoints outta my 79 axle when I changed the u-joints....

Wobbling the axle around probably wouldn't do the seal any good either. Then you'd have to pull the axle to replace the seal.
