Taking out u-joint in front axle shaft (pics)
Having difficulty here.
Read a few tutorials / tried finding some videos but still no luck.
The picture show's the u-joint under a microscope... I believe there are "snap-rings" in there but for the life of me I just cannot find them.
Can someone advise me on how to take out the u-joint with the picture below (using the letters) ?
I appreciate your help.
Thanks

Be very careful if you do use a torch it can cause problems.
Your much better off with a thin cutoff wheel and just cut the crosses.
The crosses are hardened steel so the hack saw is a lost cause.
When I did mine I had to cut all 8 points to get the crosses out.
Also a good soak in something like Kroil or some other penetrating oil
that you like will help.
If the caps are really stuck and you have a car or a truck you can use.
It may be worth the skin and blood to have a shop do the change for you.

I decided to cut it out... but now I have another problem.
The new u-joint goes in but now I believe there are "caps" that go in to seat the u-joint with the axle shaft..... Pictures below (hard to explain).
But as of now, the U-joint caps don't fit in with the axle shaft. I know for sure the U-joint is the correct size.
Thanks

Be VERY CAREFUL if you are using a torch on U joints. There have been a few(including a younger version of myself) using a torch to cut the u joint out and have them explode in your face. A trip to the hospital with facial burns is not a lot of fun. I think if there is a grease fitting you should remove it first so the grease has an outlet.
A safer way if you need to cut them out would be to use a cut off wheel.

A press or a friend with a press is your best bet. A large solid vice is a good second option. A couple of sockets and a big hammer along with PB blaster is the third option. I used using option three.
Use a chisel to take the snap rings off. Then socket to catch the cap if you do not have a bench. Then a socket that fits inside to drive the cap out.
It isn't diffictult but it takes some brute force. It goes back together fairly easily. Make sure you don't drop any needles.

Thanks for the video but my problem is ther u-joint cap isn't sitting in the drive shaft....
I went to the local auto shop thinking I had the wrong u-joint and they brought out one that didn't fit either.
I'm thinking,
A. The 2 new u-joints that didn't have big enough caps were the wrong size...
B. There is an additional cap I need to put inside the driveshaft.
