has anyone rebuilt their steering shaft? my highboy didnt have a ragjoint, has a shaft w/ a u joint on the column end and a telescoping joint on the steering box end. i made some new parts for the box end joint to tighten it up, but was wondering where to get parts for the column end. it nnot like a driveshaft u-joint. it doesnt have a cross in the middle, rather a square block with one solid pin and 2 half pins. are these pins and caps available anywhere? the name on the caps was 'torrington', which i have found has been bought by timken.
This may not be any help and I cant remember all the details but a few years ago, while installing a tilt column, I replaced the factory steering shaft u-joint on my 78 f150 4X. Locally we have a knowledgeable 4X store and they suggested a Jeep steering shaft u-joint replacement. I do recall it was not expensive and more or less an easy bolt in. The new part is a normal looking u-joint with jerk fitting and real caps.
Im sure this is a common swap and someone should be able to give you more details.
FWIW I believe the ragjoint was only to dampen vibration in the steering wheel. these tend to tear over time. I've gone through several of them. Solid u-joints seem to be the better way to go.
