My 1988 Ford F150 has dual fuel tanks and I have an issue with them. What happens is when driving the truck on the rear tank setting, the truck drains the front tank or the truck stalls out. I have replaced the dual function thingy on the bed rail with a brand new one as well as the rear fuel pump in the tank. What else could be the issue here?
well i do know ford had a recall for that problem , the fix was installing one way check valves on the top of each pump . had a 1992 truck done a few years ago
I don't think that recall applies in your case. The tank switching mechanism is pressure activated I beleive, and your problem may be a bad in-tank lift pump in the rear tank not providing pressure to close the connection to the front tank. It could also be bad wiring or related but definitely test the rear pump.
Hope this helped, I'm not too familiar witht he 87's & 88's

Are you sure the switch on the dash is actually changing your tank selection? Can you hear the low-pressure (in-tank) pump from the rear when you turn the key to the ON position?
Popa Tim is right on the 88. It sounds like you are just running off the front tank.
Will the rear tanks level ever go down?
Has it done this all of the time you have had the Truck?
Do what torquemeister said, you might have a switch or wiring problem and try the switch in both positions.
I will check out what was suggested shortly and get back to you guys on what is actually happening. I will answer some of the questions that I know the answer to.
The fuel tank issue I am having has was there when I bought the truck. However, I bought the truck from my dad who was the 2nd owner of the truck, it had just started doing this before I bought the truck. I thought it would be something rather simple to fix. For the majority of time that my dad had the truck, the tanks worked perfectly.
When I change the tanks on the switch in the dash. The fuel guage changes accordingly. For example right now the front tank has 1/2 a tank of fuel, if I switch to the rear, the guage reads full. However, I will go and turn the key on and see if I can hear that rear fuel pump kick in.
Putting the key in the on position, the only time I hear the rear pump is when the switch is on the rear pump. It makes more noise than the front pump and does not sound healthy. When the tank is set to the rear tank, I am not sure I hear the front pump or not. I have a friend coming over and I will them turn the key while I am under the truck to listen to what pumps are working and when.
My 88 did the same thing. If i would fill both thanks and run the rear tank first the front tank would overflow. So I would run the front tank first, and then I would switch to the rear tank. When I would switch to the rear tank, in about 50 miles the rear tank would be empty and the front tank would be almost full. Ford did have a recall on this issue, but however it did mot apply to my truck. That I did not understand because my truck was having the same problem as the recall, but my VIN did not fall into the recall list. I also had the problem with the firewall separating when you engage the clutch. Again Ford had a recall on this problem, but said that my VIN did not fall on the recall list.
