I had a flashing OD light and brought it into Ford, nothing seemed too wrong, now they are telling me that I need a new transmission because 2nd was gone, they want to charge me $4600 for this, is this right> Its a 1995 Explorer.
wayyyyyy too much. of course this is the dealer telling you this. $1500-$2000 installed for a completely different, rebuilt tranny is a good range.... at a tranny shop. if they are just going to rebuild yours, then it will be a lot less.
Please get 2nd or 3rd...or even 4th opinions and quotes for this job.
If you want the stealership (Why are you bothering with'em for non-warranty work??? Hello?) to rip you for $4600, who are we to stop you?
P.S. Since you didn't provide us with the code pulled for that flashing OD light, we can't really tell you how out of line anything but the price of a tranny job is.
Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to reset the codes. Then drive it. If the light stays off and the trans shifts normally, then I wouldn't worry about it unless the light comes back on. The light on my 95 comes on about once a year. I've pulled codes to no avail, and resetting the light puts it back to normal. Also, be aware that when the light is blinking, the trans goes into 'limp' mode which causes it hard shift between gears.
I have a 97 Explor w/ 4.0 engine and have flashing O/D light. Pulled a 0741 code and it said replace Torq. Conv. Solenoid. Did that and now 741 code again!
When I clear the code , it runs and shifts fine! then code comes back and then it shifts bad. Any thoughts anybody?
Thanks
Hey Col. - Since when does a code tell you what componet to replace? I never saw a code that diffinitively said you had to change this to fix the problem.
741 just says torque convertor clutch circulation is stuck off. It doesn't say the solenoid is bad. Is the solenoid getting current? Is the PCM telling to solenoid to go on? Is the hydraulic pump bad and not giving enough flow to trip the sensor? Is the sensor bad?
For Nelson - if second gear was bad, why would the OD light be stuck on? OD is 4th or 5th gear. The OD light stays on when you hit the button to turn OD off and elect not to use it. Is the button tripped? If not, maybe the switch is bad and it is actually tripped even though it feels like it's not. Not sure how but if the switch goes in, it sure does come out. Pull it and disconnect it. Does the light go out? Also - does it feel like it's not going into OD? if so, that's what the switch is for.
