Hi guys, a buddy of mine is interested in a 86 Bronco and all he knows about it is it has the 2.9 and it's black.
What I'm wondering is, is there anything to look out for with this year, and could you guys just give me some info on the Bronco IIs(front and rear suspension, ect....), I'm really not to familiar with them, just the 78-96 Big broncos.
yes, its good practice to never over heat this motor. The heads will crack. The rust appears under the doors, at the bottom of the lift gate along the seam, and usally anyware else it dose on other vehicles. It depends all on where the vehilce was and how it was treated. Bronco II's are fun and affordable, but are not good if your looking for a work truck sence the 2.9 has only 140 hp and 160-ish lbs of torque (pretty gutless). With mods you may get up to 175 hp hopfully. Pretty much the bronco II is for recreation and light work loads, as well as being one of the best vehicles off the road for its time sence its so compact to fit into most trails. Gas mpg will differ from truck to truck but genrally a good running bronco II will get you 18-23 mpg city and maybe 26 ish on highway with all the emmison divices working up to spec such as the egr valve. If you ever come to the piont where the 2.9 has qiut in a bronco II. If you have about 2,500 bucks you can do a pretty painless engine swap from a 4.0 ranger, explorer, or aerostar to give the bronco a good 180 hp and nearly 200 lbs torque with no mount or crossmember changes. Good luck with your friend find a bronco II. Tell us what he finds.
Thanks for all that info broncIInoob, as for as I know the 2.9 is in good shape and even if it was in bad shape I'm afraid that he would have to sell it, b/c he's on a really tight budget, like I am.
Is there any cheap way to lift the front?
any 4.0 aerostar, explorer, ranger made between 1900 and 1994 ( this is why this swap is very common ) try google form some info on it, there was another 4x4 site stirctly for broncos that had a whole page for it. Luckly it is an 86 bronco II becuase you can still use to orignal wiring harnass but you need to splise some wires to adapt the new ECM from the 4.0 motor. Also the tranny usally is good to swap in as well sence the 2.9 has a greater risk of blowing up. Not saying it will, people have had luck with the 2.9 tranny mounted to the 4.0 but chances are the tranny will die. As far as i know the tranny is like the motor, all the mounts are the same and everything. I dont know wut mods must be done to make the collom shift work will the floor shifter if you swap in an new auto trans.
I have a 87 BII and the only problems I have had is with the tranny. Auto with overdrive. Jasper wanted around $2000 for a rebuilt. I was told to install a bigger tranny cooler. My 2.9 does tap. Has done this for 5 years and I have abused the tar out of it. I have pulled some pretty heavy loads with her. Pulled a forktruck out of a gravel driveway TWICE. (LONG STORY) I have had 2 Jeeps, the real ones (******) and my BII is the next best thing to a Jeep. Having a great heater and power steering and brakes are really nice.
the tapping is most likley no big deal at all, most likley normal for this engine. I love the heater on my bronco ( i have the same yaer as you, mines 5 speed though) The heater blows hot air within 3 mins of the engine running. i heard the auto trannys didnt work that well.
