Have any of you installed new carpet in your truck. I just got new carpet from Stockinteriors and have it layed out in my '72. I have a few questions:
Right now the carpet goes up about 8" past the firewall cover. Should it be trimmed back and tucked under the FW cover or can it go over the cover. How did Ford do it?
If I put it over the cover then how should I finish off the top edge?
At the back the carpet goes about 1' up the gas tank covering the jack handle clip and hold-down screw thing. Should I remove these items and reinstall them on top of the carpet or trim the carpet back?
My truck has a floor shift and separate tranny tunnel cover but the hump in the carpet still seems a bit too high. Any thought on this?
Should I use a little heat to get some of the wrickles out?
Sounds like they just made it oversize in every way-
Usually the carpet or rubber pad goes just under the front of the seat, and about 1" behind the firewall pad.
Ford had several different "hump" configurations, what transmission do you have in your truck?
Yeah you are right about the carpet being bigger in every direction...it sticks out of the doors by about 3".
As far as the tranny goes, the truck used to be an automatic and I converted to manual 4 speed OD tranny. The carpet is the final phase of that project. The hump cover I used is about 1 1/2" high. Is there higher covers?
as for the extra in the middle, the way they used to fix that was to get some very hot water and pour onto the spot that was buckling up and that would shrink the carpet. i dont know if that would help in this case. it depends what the carpet is made from. i dont think it works on synthetic.
