V 10 Plug Blowout Poll

I read alot about the plug blowout on the V10 on this forum. I don't believe that it's a common problem. I would like to see how many on this forum, have or have not had a problem and what year a mileage you have on the V10.

2002 V10
22,000 miles
no plug problems

well out of 78 trucks at work , which are all modular engines either 5.4 or 6.8 s far there have been 3 . 2 on the same truck and one on another. however when they got fixed they had 189,000 and 214,000 on them . the trucks were not taken care of very well (bought at auction for 2,000 each) the plugs were very loose . it seems if you replace them at 100k and torque them down there will not be any issues. the biggest problem is the plugs are overlooked and not torqued right. this has always been a issue with aluminum heads but more so with these engines. the other 76 trucks have had zero issues. the plugs get torqued every 50k and replaced at 100K. other little items seem to fail before the engines in these trucks. we stock about 25 IAC valves , plenty of coilpacks and VSS.

I had a plug get loose on a 1997 4.6, it didn't blow out, but I heard it before it blew. Whats a VSS? The speed sensor in the diff?

No plug problems

Plug problems are a modular engine problem not just the V10! The 4.6, 5.4, and 6.8 all have had plug blow out problems.

No problems.

'01, 22K miles, 5.25 years since manufacture. More like 70K miles worth of air and fuel have gone through the motor.

Changed plugs a few months ago, figuring 5 years was long enough. Two had dirt/moisture in the plug holes, one was pretty rusty and was slightly tough to get out of the head. (see my gallery) I suspect that left until 100K miles, that plug would have come loose and ejected Or the threads would be so torn up on removal that the new plug would come loose pretty quick. Inspected all threads and everything looked fine. Reinstalled with anti-sieze and torqued to 14 ft/lbs. Runs better, especially cold starts.

Blew one plug.

It was avoidable, I heard it ticking but didn't act in time. I didn't know plugs blew on these right after I bought it. If only I found this site before, but thanks to the people here I repaired it with the Timesert kit in the parking lot and all has been well in the past 8k miles or so. I replaced the other nine afterwards and all were tight and the threads were in good shape.

Take solace in the fact that shortly after (or even before) it was ticking, the threads were probably gone already.
