Stock Intake & New 4bbl Carb

Hey, all. It's been a while. The trucks been put up for the winter but as spring approaches it's time to gear up for the season.

Question: I want to replace the carb, currently a 2bbl on a 360 with [what is presumably] a stock intake manifold. I want to install a 4bbl, say with a 770cfm Avenger or the like. Before I start dismantling I'm wondering if someone can tell me if all stock 360 intake manifolds are set up for 4bbl carbs or do I need to replace the intake manifold.

Thank for the input.

On an old Chevy I used to have I took off the 2bbl carb and the intake was compatible with a 4bbl so it was just a bolt-on operation. I'm curious with Ford if I can bolt a 4bbl onto my stock manifold or if I need a 4bbl manifold.

Maybe a stupid question, but both the truck and Ford are new to me.

You will need a 4bbl manifold. I have not seen a 2bbl manifold that would be com[atible with a 4bbl, but you never know about Chevys.

Thanks, so back to the original question because I'm not being clear: Does a stock Ford 360 2bbl engine have a 4bbl-sized intake manifold inlet on top or a 2bbl-sized inlet. The Chevy had a 4bbl-sized manifold inlet under their 2bbl carb. I do understand a 2bbl inlet will not fit a 4bbl carb.

I don't know how else to ask. The truck is at another house and I was hoping to order a carb for the weekend.

well now i got it. the chevy probably had a 4bbl intake which someone used a 4bbl to 2bbl adapter on. very common to do.

you will need a 4bbl manifold.

The 360 is a FE series engine, so anything sold for a 390 will work. The 360 is a 390 block.
I would advise you to leave the 2 barrel on the truck. You will dump more gas in with a larger carb, and more out the tailpipe. Rebuild the engine and that could change. Dual exhaust will give you the most return for your buck, on the ol truck. IMHO

I think that's sound advice. 2bbl it is.

well if you could keep your foot out of the pedal a small 4bbl would be best. they have smaller primaries than 2bbls , but once you tap into the secondaries all bets are off. also both the FE 360 and 390 share the same block an bore of 4.05 . just the rotating assembly is different.

A 770 cfm carb will be way too big for your motor. Get down to a 600 or 650 and play with the jets. I have a 600 on my 390, it replaced a 500 cfm 2bb. Gas mileage never changed, but I have the option of opening some secondaries up. (Which I frequently do).

If you're not concerned with going fast, I would stick with the two barrel. If you want to wake up the old 360 and get some more power, you might want to consider the Edelbrock Performer intake and matching carb, cam, and lifters. However as Jowilker said, just a good freeflowing dual exhaust with the stock intake and carb will probably offer you the best hp return for dollar invested......
