Talking 393 Stroker W

We are in the middle of building a 393 out of a 351 W. Using an Eagle crank. The rods and pistons came as a package from AD Performance. Problem I ran into is that the generous radius on the crank creates an interference between the edge of the rod bearings and the nice diesel style round radius fillets on the rod journal. The crankshaft really is a work of art. I have several tricks up my sleeve to fix this but has anybody else run into this particular problem and is there a pre beveled set of bearings availible. We are also waiting for a response from AD Perf.

i believe the machine shop needs to clearance the block for that crank. you should also have the mains align honed to make sure things are straight.

We're in the process of checking rotating clearance now, and we will grind it here if needed. What we ran into is side clearance for the rod bearings, They are rubbing on the extra large radius of the crank journal. We already talked to them and we will have to chamfer the bearings to fit. No biggie , thats hot rodding.

Make 100% sure you've got the right parts here...not uncommon for that to happen, even when you are pretty sure.

I didn't have any problems like that with my stoker. I would double check the numbers. All you need for that stroker is the crank, stock legnth rods and 302 pistons with the correct overbore if you are boring it out.

Naw, we figured it out. The 302 and 351W are almost alone in that the conn rods assemble into the engine with the bearing lock tang up toward the cam. Almost all other engines assemble with the lock tangs down. keep in mind that these are custom eagle rods and they are very nice but are unmarked. Once we flipped the rods over then the bearings come together in the center of the journal and and everything fits well. We have assembled and rotated the crank rods and pistons, and now it's all back apart for cam bearings and final assembly. Everything looks good now. Thanks.

Oh they had markings on them but they were a 6 digit number on the lock lug side. this number was on both halves to indicate matching part orientation and is where you normally see the numbers 1-8 stamped on stock parts. The other side of the rod had some kind of control # on it that did not match top to bottom. I'm used to seeing this kind of # in Diesel engines and I can see why this kind of rod is like that too. We had to backpedal but just a little. LOL

He's got an edelbrock manifold and 650 edelbrock carb on the engine in the 83 bronco now he's gonna transfer over. Also in the bronco is a near new Comp DEH275 Cam. It's got headers, I should get Mark to start posting about his engine here. I'm just kinda gettin him goin on it. My real project is under the FE forum "My daughter building a big block". These two engines are going together side by side. Kind of a fun winter project.

that carb will be to small for a 393 and i would be concerned that cam wouldnt be the optimal choice for this setup as well. might call compcams and ask them with all the stuff your puting on that motor what cam they suggest you run. better to do that swap now then after the motor is in the rig and he's unhappy with it

Keep in mind that a good hot rod is never really done. I also advised him to keep the old engine in the corner of the garage for when he scatters this one. LOL As for carb we are at almost 5000 feet and engines at this altitude are easily over carburated. Also the cam, all his stuff came from Comp and the cam was selected for high perf and high RPM. The dual energy cam will favor the exhaust side and the heads have been taken out to the max Dia valves. ( The in and ex valves almost touch between them) Also the exhaust ports have been heavily worked.
True, these parts may not be what he's looking for but again maybe they are. No one here has any qualms about tearing down to replace or try other stuff. Thats hot rodding. I have heard the other engine and it really runs Good. All we're doing now is adding compression and stroke. (icing on the cake)

Its an 83 Bronco, custom C6 Auto and I think he has a 2200 stall converter in it. I'll check when I see him next.

what a great project, I will say though that building that motor for a rig that ways so much and the motor is producing power hi in the rpm range says mass carnage to me. but fun doing it im sure. what are you guys gonna use this bronco for? mud bogging? thats a lot of stall and on half ton axles you get the power down and it will break no doubt hehe
