First of all, I'm new here. I have to say...wonderful site, great place for info. Now, on to the question.
I have a 98 Ranger XLT w/ an electronic 4x4 switch. Is it possible to convert the shifter to manual? If so, how can I begin to work on the project? Or am I stuck with this faulty switch/connector that works when it wants.
I'm not sure what you're asking exactly. Do you want to put a manual transfer case in your truck, as opposed to the electronic one that's in there? Why, are you having trouble with your 4WD system?
Your '98 has the Pulse Vacuum Hublock (PVH) 4x4 system. The following thread is a little long-winded but it is loaded with information about the PVH system, it's worth a read on your part:
There is a way to convert the electronic shift transfer case to manual, but it is a 100% home fab job. The electronic case uses an electric motor to turn a rotary gear selector. I have heard of a couple of conversions using a cable similar to a speedometer cable, but beefier. You would have to adapt the cable to the gear selector at the t-case and set up a rotary gear selector in the cab. There are manual versions of the t-case available, but they are hard to find and pricey when you can (the manual was a seldom ordered option). The method used to engage 4 wheel drive is different between the two cases. Another option would be find a wrecked Ranger FX4 with manual transmission (which also came with a manual transfer case). But again, this may be hard to find.
