Alright well im 16, and at my high school we have to have a junior project. Which is like a minimum 20 hour project with essays and stuff. I have a 6 cyliner 95 ranger Xlt. My problem is that I have a boat as my junior project. Im fixing up an old boat and making it look pretty good. Anyways I dont know if I should get a towing hitch on my ranger, so far I have the stock bacll they put on. The little ball right by my liscence plate that is attached to my bumper. The boat Im guessing is about 500 pounds. I dont know if when Im towing the boat it will bend my bumper
I believe (not sure) that your bumper should have a 1000 lb limit. If you plan on pulling things much, I'm with Rockledge, go for the hitch. If this is it, and you know that the boat and trailer combined are under 1K, I personally would use the bumper.

I'm with you all the way, if under 1K use the bumper. Future heavier loads will require a hitch,
I would think that if the bumper is in good shape, it should pull a 500 lb boat fine. Don't forget to factor in the weight of the trailer, too.
But, if you plan on doing more towing in the future, or lugging that boat around a lot once you get it done, you might as well spring for a reciever hitch.
my 2002 says it's rated for 2000 lbs, 200 on the tongue, if the older ranger is that same, i wouldn't waste the money on a hitch. I put a hitch on mine for $125 because i towed about 1500-2000 pounds across the desert (800 miles) and didn't want to risk anything.

Correct, don't waste the money for that little boat. The area of the bumper that the ball mounts to is tied to the frame in addition to the bumper mounting supports.
I pull a 7500 lb boat off the bumper of my 4.0 ranger every now and then, granted its only short little trips down to the shop or back where I didnt want to pull my silverado out, but the bumper would handle it fine, that only had a tounge weight of about 650 lbs, a 500 lb boat wont be a problem for you at all
