I need to see some pics of 37" mods, preferably on 18" wheels.
Has anyone done this without lifting the truck, exept for a 2.5" leveling kit install.
Anyone only with a 3-4" lift (Skyjacker, Rancho)
I am thinking about trimming the front wheelwell, it should be enough to clear the 37" tires.
Also what gears would be best to use for moderate offroad and snow??
I am thinking 4.56 ?
I dont have pics or anything...but with 37" tires...I would definately go 4.56. I have 35" tires, stock 3.55 gear...which is an effective actual ratio of about 3.20...sucks terribly! I am thinking of going with 4.56 which with the 35s would actually give me around a 4.10 gear. Keep that all in mind...with 37s a 4.56 would prob be close to a 3.90 or 4.00 ratio, without doing the calcs would be my guess.
I have the 35's with 4.56 gears. WIth a 37 I would go with even a bigger ratio. In the 8.8 axle which I have they make a 4.56, and a 4.88. If you go to randysringandpinion.com they have a calculator to figure out what rpms you would be running at what speed. That is another factor to consider
04yellowF150, agree completely!...hey bud I have the 5.4L in my truck with 35s but what RPMs do you run at highway speeds. For example: 55-75mph or something! I opting to go 4.56, I have the 9.75 rear axle!
stang302, I have the 4.6L and I think I run at 2300 rpm at 75 mph. It is hard to judge because my speedo is off greatly. I am about to order a superchip to correct that problem. What brand are planning on going with? I went through randysringandpinion.com and got the Yukon gears they sell. They ran me about $800 with master install kits front and rear. I also had to have a notched X-pin to alow the rear to be installed. I highly recomend them their service people are great. hope this helps
THanks 04Yellowf150...I got on that website you mentions RandysRingPinion...their RPM calculator and MPH calc were right on the money with my truck. THis definately helps the decision, I was worried going 4.56 might be too much gear. But actually with my 35s at highway speeds, it only puts me at 300rpms higher than with my stock truck setup! Not sure on brands...I dont know anything about installing gears myself, know alot of other people who do and potential people to install for me. Was $800 for parts...did you install yourself or pay for them to be installed? I was guessing prob $1500 or so for parts and the install with it being 4x4...here in Indy at a mustang performance shop!
stang302, I did not do the install myself. A local shop did the install for a little over $700, with a year waranty on the labor. you might get it even cheaper where you are up here in alaska everything is expensive. So total I spent what you were expecting right at $1500. Oh and after 500 miles the diffs will have to be drained and changed. I spent the little extra and went to synthetic.
U guys should only see how we transform/remake our trucks and jeeps here in Iceland.
Check out f4x4.is and 4x4offroads.com for some "Icelandic 4wheelers"
We trimm (cut) the fenders to make the tires fit under our trucks.
Mininum lift but enough to clear the tires while turning and for suspension.
And that is what I would like to do and it seems to me that the 37" could fit
by only cutting the front fenderflares without any additional lift.
The wheelwells on the FX4 are huge
When putting wheels with less backspace (like procomps 18" with 4.75" BS) the
tires are pushed out from the frame and I am hoping that would be enough to clear
the tires from the frame when turning.
I've been reading and doing research about these things for some time and acording to all calculations,
running 37" requiers 4.30 gears to keep the factory ratio, which is not avialable for the 9.75 rearend
(I have 3.73 original gears, running 315/70R17 now).
But I did prefer a lower ratio, so I'm thinking going with the 4.56 gears for now aleast
I still would like to see some pics of 37" trucks, preferably with mininum lift.
C'mon, someone must be riding on 37's
Just personal preference I guess then. IMO I like there to be wheel well space, without the tire filling up the whole area. I dont like the wheel well to be completely full...but is all your preference, after all your truck! As far as gears...you better go AT LEAST 4.56 if not higher, I think there is a 4.88 that is the next one up!
Randy's Calculator is no good. Try this one http://www.4x4offroads.com/tire-size-calculator.html
That one shows how to keep the original ratio, which in my FX4 is 3.73 on 32" tires, so with the 37" tires, 4.30 would be the closest.
So 4.56 is a bit slower than original ratio, and for me I think 4.88 is a bit to slow.
I am not gonna go that slow (not for now anyways) I can allways go with an Underdrive later on.
There is one thing to consider in all this, the lower the gears, the weaker they get.
Besides 4.56 is good for up to even 40" tires.

MR. BrrIce...why do you say Randys Calc. is no good. Several people on here brag about how good it is and a helpful website. And it shows everything I needed personally, maybe not the calc for orig ratio but I knew that one on my own anyways! I have 35s with 3.55 gears and every calc it caim up with was dead on the money with the way my truck is now and the way it was stock. Just my opinion...not sure why you say its no good!
Also, 4.30 will put you at what your truck is stock. With 37s you need to keep in mind your much taller, more wind drag, several variables that will affect your ratio. I would still recommend 4.56 or higher, think you would be much happier. 3.73s with 37s, your truck is gonna be a dog IMO. Your gonna need those extra rpms to turn the 37s.
