I don't know how many of you have heard about some of the problems SD owners have had with the brake caliper slide pins corroding and freezing up in the pin bore but since the kit was only $20 a side I picked up 2 of the updated designed pin kits and put them in. I didn't have a corrosion problem yet, but the pins were sure dry! The real unexpected benifit I got was that the surge I have felt for quite a while when comming to a stop is completely gone! Now, that was worth the $40 by itself. The job was extreamly simple to do.
If you've never had your calipers off and apart, HERE is what I did.
Thanks for the post GUZZLE, very informative. I may give it a try just to rid my truck of the same "grabbing" of the brakes when stopping. Had rotors checked before and they were true!
Question for you guys. That write up seems to be on this website. It also seems that there should be tons more like that in reference to all the other things that need fixing on these beasts. I've been to the tech articles/specs page and there isn't any of this stuff. Only 8 articles for diesels and two of them have to do with biodiesel. Is there a link that contains all this great stuff for these trucks. Like Kwik's transfer case slider and fork upgrade, air intake upgrade, and all the others I've read about but can't remember. It sure be nice to have a reservoir for all this stuff so that when I finally have the time to do them I can just go there. It's like I know I have a list of things I need to do but I don't remember what they are.
And guzzle, how do you only have $4K invested in a 2002 F350?
Nice write-up !! Will the new upgrade work on a early 99?
I can't say for sure because I have never worked on an early 99, but I believe that the hubs and calipers are the same. The best bet would have your dealers cross ref this part # to your truck.

I tried to make it simple that most newbies would feel comfortable tackling some of this easier stuff and easy enough for an idiot like myself to follow.

When I fist got my PSD, I also was frustrated finding information specific to our PSD's. It was just over time, gathering bits and pieces of info from the knowledgable folks here on FTE, that I was able to get most of my questions answered. As to why there is not a better tech-info area... I can not answer. Kwik suggested that I submit some to FTE of which I did on the 5th... as to date I have not received as much as an acknowledgement of writing. Months ago I know a member wrote up a great article on how to repair the display failure on the overhead console and submitted it. I still do not see that on the tech pages either.
I'll just share the little bit of stuff that I have with our little diesel forum here, and try to give back a some of the knowledge I have gained.
That is some very nice work. FORD MOTOR could use that for a Instruction sheet when they sell the part. Maybe you could make a little $$ for that, nice work.
Do the rear calipers suffer from the same problem, and if so will the same part number work for the rear too? Im gathering all the stuff I need to do a brake job, so i'll just add this to the list of stuff to do.
what a great article you wrote. I have the same problem with my 2000 powerstroke. i put brand new Aplied Rotor Technology rotors on in november and my truck brakes still pulsate. it is driving me crazy. I guess I'll have to give it the $40 try you suggest. nothing else has worked.

I have not heard of the rears running into the same problems that the fronts cause with the pins rusting into the bore. The rear calipers are a different part # than what the fronts are. Now, the pins may be the same, but I have not tore mine down yet to see. If you're doing brake work, I would at least open them up and give them a good coat of silicone caliper lube because they will dry out.
Check with your dealer if there is an updated caliper silde pin for the rears and post back what your findings are.
