I bout 72 Ford with 360 in it that either had a bad head gasket or cracked head. Turned out the heads were cracked. So my Dad took them to get them fixed for me, since I couldn't do it at the time. Anyway, we had an old 390 sitting in our shop so he took the heads off of it into the shop too and told them to fix the best of the 4. From what I understand the valves are different in the heads, is there any other differences? And if the guy fixed one of the 360 heads and one of the 390 heads and they are mismatched on the truck would that cause me any problems? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
You should keep the best pair and not mis-match.
You might end up with an emissions head on one side with a non emissions head on the otherside. This will make an engine run better on one side. That will lead to a poorley running engine. Emmissions heads have filled in exhaust ports which reduce flow.
All Fe heads have the same size valves except for 428 cj's and 427's.
What are the casting #'s on the heads?
I'll have to get back to you with the casting numbers. Unfortunately I put the heads on a good while back. Didn't even think about checking to make sure they were matched, just took that for granted. But I do have the left over two that I can look over. So if I follow right I can just measure the exhaust ports and see if they match up? If they do then i'm ok, if not then I got problems? There any other differences in the heads? As far as I know one came from the 72 and the other was from a mid 70's, say around a 76 i believe. Thanks for the help.
72 and 76 are probably either C8AE-H or D2TE-AA heads, these two heads are essentially the same, I saw no obvious difference between them when I still had both sets. And as far as I've heard the only difference was the exhaust seats on D2TE-AA were induction hardened to be partially compatible with unleaded fuel.
