Yeah no kidding. What does the nissan frontier put out, like 300? I wish Ford would soup up some of their vehicles. Cough (turbodieselranger) Cough. You could make a fairly wicked engine out of the newer SOHC 4.0's. I'm a strong believer in the SOHC engines. A guy at my work is pulling 20 MPH highway with his 5.4. That is crazy out of a V8. What year/model truck do you have?

Rember, the ranger is smaller and lighter, than the oters. The power to weight ratio is still good. I also believe in the 4.0 sohc, give it a 3 valve head, varible timming, a better set of cams, and whoola, 250 to 260 hp. Also explorer express makes a supercharger for it, and there is headers, catbacks, udp, e-fans, cai, and bama chips. A lot of potental for the ranger. Cause nomatter how fast it is from the factory, we will want it faster. With the mustang now using the 4.0, there we be alot more stuff comming out, STAY TUNNED!!

Peter I have an 04 4x4 and on an extended road trip I was only getting about 20 mpg in US gallons so your buddy is doing really well with his 5.4 which is probably not working all that hard at highway speed. The 5 sp auto in mine helps to keep the revs down while the 4.11's give it lots of grunt off the line. I just wish the aftermarket would step up to the plate as there isn't really much in the way of stuff for the 4.0. I don't really get excited by chips in gas motors though they are terrific in a diesel application. Dual exhaust and headers plus a cold air intake system would help but could be pricey if not going for a no-cat off road system. I think the best bang for the buck would be to stuff a crate v-8 in it but then I don't know how that would be on the rest of the power train and you are back to adding the dual exhaust too.
I hadn't heard of a supercharger for it only for the 3.0 so big surprise for me thanks will have to check it out. Sorry I took so long to reply. Cheers

I heard about Japan overrating their engines! Maybe it's like their overrated cars!
I was excited when I heard that the Mustang would be getting the 4.0L SOHC. But, the performance market just will never be that great, most who want performance will buy the GT for 5K more. If Ford would get off their rear and bring back SVT, maybe we could get at least a 4.6L V8 for the Ranger.

There's talk there won't be a Ranger(Blue Oval News) after a couple of years of disappointing sales. Last year we went to the ALMS race in Portland and in 600 miles round trip I saw one on the Interstate, but tons of big Fords, Chevies and Dodges....
SVT could do a lot to turn that around. For now it seems that bigger is better and I don't mean displacement. That's sad as the Ranger is like a sporty car with a box.

damn, speaking of Tocomas. I got smoked in the 1/4 by a stock four runner. He ran a 17.3ish and i ran a 17.7. Ah well most new trucks do put out more hp than the rangers do. All in all, i still love my ranger.
