check engine lite...running great
Ok guy's my check engine light just came on . The truck is 2002 sc4x4 with 5.4. It's running fine and good miliage. If this was just a blip..will the light stay on until I clear it,or does staying on mean there is definetly something wrong. Like I said truck is running great....
Go to an Advanced Auto Parts and have them read the code in your computer. This will tell you what part is causing the code. I seriously doubt it is a "blip". Afterwards, if you wish to clear the computer and see if it happens again...disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for a minute or so then reconnect. This will clear the codes from the computer. When the truck is run again, if it is a "blip", the check engine light will not come back on but, I suspect it will.

It takes two consecutive drive cycles with a fault to turn on a CEL. You've only driven one so far. Don't be surprised if the CEL and the code both come back today or tomorrow.
If it comes back, be sure to follow the diagnostic in the service manual instead of just swapping out parts. This will prevent wasting money on unneeded parts and will keep the frustration level down.

Thank's ....eccellent stuff. I'm on it ....better yet lets hope it just doesn't come back on....happy trails

P0140
Not to highjack the thread. 2001 F150 screw 4.6 150,000 miles. Threw a P0140 code. Autozone suggested put some Lucas injector cleaner in it and reset the computer after running a couple of tanks of gas through it. The truck never ran bad and never noticed a drop in power or gas milage. The light is now off. Did the Lucas work, or will it return and cause problems later? Thanks in advance.
Hi macjb and welcome to the forum
The manual doesn't show a P0140.
Are you sure it wasn't a P0401 code? That's probably the most common trouble code on newer Fords and most of the time you won't notice any driveability problems. It's usually caused by a bad DPFE sensor. A search in the forum here will probably find more info than you want on the P0401.

A bad or loose gas cap will also sometimes throw an evap type code. This happened on several occasions when my son or wife filled my '98 F-150 up and didn't screw the cap on tight enough. Once when I was traveling, the CEL came on and it scared them.
Towed it to the dealer, who charged them $80 to read the code and tighten the gas cap.
Oh well.
180 clams for a loose gas cap is pretty bad, but I would rather they be cautious than blow an engine, I guess!

P0401 is insufficient EGR flow. You might start by removing the EGR and checking for clogged ports. Before dissassemling you can check the valve's function by appling a 5in vacuum to the EGR with a vacuum pump while the vehicle is idling. If you don't see a decrease in the rpm's then it is probably a defective/clogged EGR causing the problems.
