I was towing a 5th wheel camper, (10400lbs) though down town New Orleans Monday. No Hwy stuff, lots of starting & stopping. Total trip was less than 25 miles.
OK Here's what happen...4 miles left .. came to a stop light, Light turns green, Trans slips, I get into the gas station, Check trans level, Its low. Go inside buy fluid, come out and theres red trans fluid pouring out from the torque converter area. I'm 285 miles from home, in a town that has no open shops or stores.
I move it to a open parking lot, remove the camper. after 2.5 hours of calling around on towing and prices. I started the truck to move it, and no fluid was pouring out or leaking at all. I shifted foward & Back seems fine, ok, added 4 qts drove 2 miles to the store. Still no leaks, checked fuild, added 2 qts, let the truck run for 15 mins, shifting foward , back.
OK, for the big step, Drive it 285 miles home?????
O'yes I did 70-75 ( no camper ). Still no leak or Slipping
What could have happen? Overheated? Safety blowoff?
This happened on an Aerostar that I had once. Exactly the same, poured out fluid, let cool added more fluid went on my way and hasn't happened since. I was probably low on fluid when it happened and it was very hot outside. What happened is that when the fluid is low it doesn't have the heat dissipation ability as it does when it is full. My trans heated up to the point of the front seal actually turning outward and allowing the fluid to pour out the front shaft. When the trans cooled back down the seal repositioned itself, I added fluid to full and went on my way with no further problems. I was sure that when it happened my front seal was gone and it was going to require the trans removal. Do you have a trans temp guage? Was it overheated when this happened?
Edit: fluid didn't pour out front shaft, came out between the front seal and TC shaft.

The trans overheated and the front seal allowed fluid to leak out. If it isn't leaking anymore it's probably fine. All the starting and stopping and low speed operation is too much for the stock '99 trans cooling system.
To prevent this from happening again you need more trans cooling. A trans cooler from the 6.0L 2003 and newer trucks would do it.
Yep, you definatley cooked that fluid. I thnk if it ws mine I would get a bigger cooler and also have a flush done to get that fluid out of the t/c and the tranny. I wouldnt want that fluid in my tranny for very long. Just my 2 cents.
might think of a tranny guage to go with an egt gauge. thats alot of weight youre carrying without a means to monitor whats going on. another 2 cents. your truck will love you for it!
