My truck had been sitting for 3 days when I went to start it yesterday. It was about 25 degrees out, and block heater wasn't plugged in. Waited for the glowplug light to go off and it started right up. Immediately after starting, there was a 'clunk'. One clunk only. It 'seemed' to come from the passenger side of the engine, but I wouldn't swear to that.
First time I ever heard it. Not particularly worried about it either, just wondering if this had ever happened to anyone else.
btw - 2005 with a little over 11k miles. Zero issues so far.

Could it have been the air conditioning compressor clunking? Besides my 6.0 which I have not heard a clunk yet, I have a v10 that has a clunk almost every time I start it. Scared the devil out of me the first time it did it. I thought something (cat) got into the belt. I was able to track it down to the compressor clutch engaging.
I agree with Maxium 4x4, about the door in the heater. Sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't, and it has been at different temperatures. But, definitely try to find the source so you know for sure what it is that is making the clunk.
I have this same concern, and I have no idea what it is, so anyone that might now- please give your input...With all of the EGR Valve problems in these 6.0's I was thinking that maybe it was my EGR Valve coming open/ closed from being stuck, and that's why it clunked?

It`s not the EGR valve clunking, It`s the door / flapper located in the HVAC duct that you here. I have 2 e350`s and 1 F250 that do this same thing and yes, it can scare the crap out of ya the first time
You'll never hear the EGR valve opening or closing. When you key the truck you will hear the fuel pump, vacuum pump and depending on the position of your climate controls, heater switch, the blend door will "Clunk" when it returns to position.
Thanks Maximum4X4 and Custom Plumber...I thought that it could maybe be the HVAC door too... But it sounds like it is becomming "un-stuck" or something, since it is such a loud clunk. You think it's normal to be so loud? Can this door ever become stuck, or "sticky"?
I always shut off the heater/ac before shutting down the truck. That keeps the compressor from "clunking" on at startup. I noticed the same and that took care of that problem.

I agree with Maxium4x4, I have always had the clunk and was able to isolate it to the blend door.

I do the same thing. No clunky, unless I forget then my wife goes "What was that?!"
