I came here to see why I'm "only" getting 18pg hwy on my '06 5 speed. I guess it isn't too bad considering what some of you guys are experiencing. I just rolled 5K on her so maybe it will get better. I know I'll invest in a bed cover soon. That tailgate is like a wind dam back there.
My 96 Mustang GT originally was getting about 22mpg on the hwy. After some go fast mods (gears, cams, exhaust) it had dropped to 19. Once I had a computer tune done it has popped back up to around 21. Computer flash may help issues with these 4.2's as well. I may make a trip to my tuner for a little computer flash.
Well I sold my 05 F150 V6 and got a new 06 F250 SD Reg. cab XLT 5.4 V8 Auto..
I love my new truck. What a far superior truck to a F150 feels more HD like my old 79.
The only thing I miss is the extra space behind seat that the F150 Reg. cab had.
The 5 speed auto trany in the F250 is a huge improvement over the F150s 4 speed.
In town MPG with only 600 miles is the same as the V6 F150 and only a few MPG less on the freeway.
I think this truck is a keeper.
I drive 70 miles a day on rural 4 lane, no stops except for exit ramp to work. I get 12 miles to the gallon, 4.2 liter engine, dealership says they have been getting alot of complaints on poor mileage This is my fifth new pickup from Ford and probably my last. Cheap, cheap, cheap. No wonder toyota is kicking their ***.
I know that the winterblend gas up here in Northern Indiana cuts your milage bad!!! My Escort has gone from 33 to 29 mpg and my truck from 19 to 15. Granted, the snow blade don't help, but even with it off, I noticed it dropped to 17mpg. Ran my blend of 50/50 E85 ethanol and regular with my Diablo Chip in 93 octane position and I'm back up to 18 combined. Regular gas sucks, and even with E85 which is about 15% less less efficient, the blend works better and has much more power. RFG gas has reduced mileage in vehicles as technology has gotten better. My dad's Studebaker Lark got over 20 mpg back in the 60's and had a 289 v-8 2bbl carb. With all the emission controls and less efficient fuels, we use more gas to make the same power.
Live in Michigan, last tank 18.5 mpg city, township driving.........35mph, 45mph, occ. 70mph, lots of stops. Not bad so far for the winter. I did get 15mpg on the last tank and realized I needed to smooth out the stop and goes. go easy on the petal and brakes................====18 mpg in the winter.
The 4.2 is a gas hog for only being a 6 cly. I guess you could say I drive aggressively but not with a heavy foot. I honestly get about 12 mpg city if I'm lucky and 14 highway on my 2001. My friends V8 Durango gets about the same. I even put a K&N Intake to get a little relief w/o any help. Although I do love the sound and xtra HP
I drive with a very light foot, no bed cover, but have also found other interesting quirks about F-150's from this website.
The A/C compressor cycles if DEFROST is selected, but not If FLOOR is selected.
The rear drum brakes froze up on the first cold day (-20C). After getting the cable unstuck, and not using the parking brake since, mileage has gone up.
Figure the brakes were dragging slightly, Doh!
Truck has 215,000 kms, basically stock condition.
Plan on cleaning the MAF sensor, changing rear end fluid, checking brakes all round, repacking front hubs, etc.
OUCH, guess Michigan has gone to the winter blend, last tank was 11 mpg.......city highway with no change in habits, just changed the oil, I wonder what they do to the winter blend that we get such a decrease. Jez, 22-24 highway in the summer and 10-14 in the winter. You know electric drives have been in the big mining equipment since 1969. Al trains are electric with diesels only to produce electricity.
