Yeah, today's engines require almost no conventional "break-in period".
The manufacturing tolerences and metals used are way better than the "good old days".
I noticed very little improvement with either my trucks after the miles built up.
Seems like a slight improvememtn once I got past 10,000-15,000 miles or so.
By slight, I mean slight. Maybe 1 mpg or less.

tula, I thought of you the other day.
On my return trip from Nashville to Bham, I was driving dead straight into some seruious wind. Almost constant 30mph with higher gusts.
At times, driving on flat ground at 75 mph, the torque converter would unlock just trying to maintain 70 mph.
As you know, the big enemy of mpg at interstate speeds is wind, more so than weight.
So, it was like I drove home at about 90 -100 mph.
I got 17 mpg.
I tell you, climbing some long hills with that strong head wind, there were lots of times when it shifted out of OD and had to work a little harder to keep up the speed.
I sort of tried to make it work harder because I wanted to see what happened to the MPG.
I was suprised it wasn't a lot worse.

Thanks for thinking of me! LOL Your rpms went from 2200 to almost 3000 rpm with the torque converter unlocked. Did you have to turn up the radio? You try to make your truck work hard and get 17mpg, I drive easy and get 13mpg. BUT...I did get 20mpg on the highway the other day...I put it in cruise and cruised. I'm back to city highway driving.

This is a really interesting thread. I have a 2000 4.2 that I get poor milage in. Best I have EVER seen is in a trip from Dallas to Houston, AC off with a tailwind and I got 15 MPG. Computer is not throwing any codes. This thing is killing me. I'm ready to get rid of it.

I'm getting killed by the mileage, but can't trade it off. I'm trying to get a few things at a time (as money allows) to improve it. I think I shall see if I get a little more play in the kick-down cable so it doesn't shift down so fast. I think I shall go this weekend to see if a local tireshop owner has any tires would trade for what I have. What wa on the truck when I got is still there and they are 4 sizes or so over stock. 265/75-16, stock is supposed to be 235/70-16. I want to go skinnier, but don't know what will fit my rims. I also need to unhook the battery and let the computer reset.

Jeez... Haven't even thought of something that basic. I need to try unhooking the battery and letting it "learn" everything again. Maybe that will help.

Well, the news keeps getting better for both of us!
Bham to NW Georgia and back to Bham today. (305 miles)
1/2 interstate (75 mph avg)
1/2 two lane hiway (60 mph avg)

21.3 mpg. My best yet.

I wonder....are we getting summer blend gas now?

No, the weather is getting warmer and these gas loving trucks run at a lower idle. I still do not believe it, I'll wait till I get a couple of tanks with improved mpg. We had a really cold morning the other day and my 4.2 sounded like a V10 when it started

Glad to hear some of you are getting beter MPG. Filled mine up today and figured 13.1 MPG all city driving. I cant seem to find anything wrong causeing such poor mileage.
I will take it in to the dealer this week and have them check it out there may be a updated computer program that may help. A frend with a SD V10 4x4 checked his mileage and he gets 12.8 in town. This V6 sucks. I keep thinking I could of had a V8.

I spoke to fast, its been colder and I've driven more city miles so I'm back in the 12 to 14 mpg range!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 and all my shifts are under 2000 rpm. I specifically got the V-6 thinking I could save gas over the 8-banger. I did save on my insurance!!!

BrianA, I have a question.

I don't have a tach in my truck yet, so what are the rpms at 70-75? I have 3.55's. Just curious.

Thanks!

or about 2100-2300 rpm if you have a 5 speed.

Note the second post here:https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=217783

OBTW, 18.8 mpg for me last fill-up.
