3.8 Pushrod install question

I just got the heads back from the machine shop for my 3.8 OHV and I'm ready to put everything back together. I have a questions about installing the pushrods properly. I know it says to rotate the engine until each tappet is bottomed out and then tighten the pushrod. Can't I just snug them with the cam in it's current position and torque them to specs in small levels all around? I would think that would be easier and avoid any timing issues when I start it up? Am I missing anything here? After my 390FE pushrod nightmare I want to avoid any problems. Thanks for any input.

You cannot effect cam timing any way what so ever by turning the motor by hand to bring the cam lobe to the base to tighten down the rocker arm.
