I got both a 390 and 400. My 400 is stock and runs okay it seems. My 390 which is in my 78 is bored 60 over and race heads but it uses about a quart of oil every 75 miles smokes really bad. the heads are broke because the ears were drilled out because the threads were stripped and bolts with washers put in. the right exhaust manifold is busted and cracked. and every part on it is just about from another year. I can put oil in three differnt spots. the flywheel is cracked but I still drive it to work because I like the truck. But I dont know if it would be money wise to change every thing back to fit the 400 or just completly redo the 390. Looking for any opinion good or bad
By the way I got the truck in this condition I didnt do it to it I know better then do what has been done to it
If you are going to spend the money to rebuild, I would say it go the 400 route.
You can go to a junkyard, get some motor mounts for about $10-20 and still have alot of money to throw in a new Carb, intake, cam and lifters, timming chain, and headers and have a really strong running 400.
Somthing to think about is, what did the Previous owner do to make the 390 bolt up to the transmission. 390s and 400s have different bolt circles, and it might be a pain to fix or change what would be needed to swap in the 400.
I got a brand new 750 edlebrock prefiormer and the 400 is still sitting a another 78 truck that I bought for 100 bucks thats how I know it runs the tranny was out of the other truck and beat up pretty bad but for a running motor I thought that wasnt a bad deal
You said your flywheel is cracked, does that mean you have a 4 speed trans.? Slip a new cam and timing set on the 400, alum. intake and a good 4 barrel and your won't believe how well it runs. I just bought a pair of motor mounts for my 400, new, for about $30 and the local parts store.
