I've been having trouble getting the truck to start lately. I know the batteries were getting weak but they crank the motor over pretty good. The voltage meter drops to about 9 volts when cranking though. I was wondering if the batteries were too weak to get the glow plugs hot or if my GPR is going bad?
do you notice alot of white smoke while cranking/upon startup? white smoke is a telltale sign of a bad glow plug system, that usually starts with the GPR. weak batteries will slow the cranking speed, which can also make the truck not start. the GPR and plugs do suck alot of charge while cranking.
The batteries were the original ones and the truck is a 2000 so I replaced them tonight. We'll see if it starts up ok tomorrow. Oh and yes there has been some white smoke.
I noticed today that when i started my truck, hardly any smoke. I was watching the volt meter, and when it popped up when the gpr finally went off, i looked in the mirror and there was white smoke starting to appear. Those glows must get pretty hot....
00Lariatman I also live in Michigan where it will be in the low 20s tonight or high teens, Don't forget to plug in your PSD in tonight if you hav'nt already. might help with the white smoke .
I almost always plug her in at night but when I'm at work I dont have a place to do that. Thats where I had trouble with it tonight. It took me 20 minutes to get it started.

I have a 2000 and recently changed the batts. and GPR and what a diff. You won't believe how she cranks with new batt.
I had to leave work for Dr. appt. today at lunch time. Temp was 27 deg. and she fired right off. Just a little white smoke though. I called napa about a GPR and they said 25.99 or something like that. So I'm getting one today and we'll see if that helps.
I put the new relay on. The big terminal on the outside of the old one was fried. The nut was turned blue and the wire boot was melted a little bit. So I'm thinking that the relay was probably bad. Ya think? The base on the new one was turned 90 deg. from the stock one but I had enough slack in the wires to make it fit ok. The only other thing I needed to buy was a very deep 10mm socket so I could get it off.
