97 PSD, auto non original. Told it has been updated to steel parts, clutches roller center etc. Had a problem with it banging when cold and slipping when hot. Seemed the Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid was bad. Replaced solenoid pack with improvment!
Part 2: Installed a transgo HD2-Tugger. Didn't do the pump mods yet, wanted to see how the improvement was, then wanted to do pump and TC. The VB/Accum already seemed to have some updated springs. But the truck didn't seem to shift like it was improved already.
Did the modifications in the Transgo kit.
First drive trans acted stupid. Not shifting out of first until real high rpm, dropping neutral on 2-3, banging rev limit, delaying engagement from standstill etc. Second drive, felt like it was binding up 1-2, and going into OD. Then the tires starting chirping like it was spinning backwards on 1-2 shift!! Had to try really hard to move, drove in 1st to get back to the shop.
Any thoughts? I'm calling trans go, then taking it to a local trans shop. I've done a few rebuilds, but not experienced enough to diagnose this.
I don't know what is in the Transgo kit. Mine was done with a Sonnex kit. But there was still an additional valve to replace that had to do with delayed shifts. I'm sure if you go to a trans shop they will know what to look for. Also since you are pulling it apart: look at www.freewaytransmissions.com
They have something called an "ESE". I put it in all my trucks. It fools the trans when sensors give bad signals, to think everything is ok. I get my TC from Precision industries. (Jack-800-649-7866) They are a bit pricey, but I think are worth it. If one of my trucks break down, it cost me a lot of money. I spend about $3000 on a trans rebuild.
How is the cost in the rebuild broken down?
I read a post where an Excursion owner paid $4100 for a rebuild.
I've got about 275,000mi on my truck and this worries me. I do yearly fluid pump-outs / filter changes that cost me around $120 just as insurance.
DallenX.... I just had my E40D rebuilt in my 1997 F250. If you've got a good shop that knows what they're doing it'll run you around $1800-$2200 depending on what parts need replacing or not. If the solenoids are good that'll save ya about $200-$250, ect...
Mine was $1850 with all the good stuff. Plus $200 for a big Hughes aluminum pan.
That's right. You can get it done for 18 to 2200. and for most people it will work fine. But if you tow heavy almost all the time, you should do more. I have one trailer that is 7k and one that is 12k, plus others. I tow something almost everyday. So my TC cost me almost $1100. The ESE is another 150. I get the sonnex kit, change the aluminum planet ring to steel and add gears, because stock is only three. Then add all the other clutches and doo-dads, and you are up to around 3k. Now while you are at it, I also change all the u-joints, the carrier bearing, and the rear main seal in the engine. Then I use full synthetic fluid. This is all costly, but a break down will cost me a lot more. My trucks are for work. I usually do not let things wear out. I change belts, bearings, cps, batteries, hoses, gps etc. all before they go bad.
If you are towing, you should have a good cooler. Also you should have a trans temp gauge.
