Talking lets break this beast in!

i am still in the midst of hooking it all back together on my referb. engine (4.9 i6) but i expect to be able to crank it over very soon. now i have heard many things about this but everyone seems to have a different opionion. my question: what is the break in methods for my engine? it has a referb cam also...is the break in for the cam the same as the rest of the engine? how long of a period is the break in period before i can drive it in a regular sort of way? thanks everyone.

it really depends on the parts you used. the cam break in is 30 mins at 200-2500 rpm . don't let it idle the first 30 mins!

If you used moly rings it's not much of an issue. If you used iron rings then avoid constant rpm driving, vary your speeds. Do a lot of accelleration runs from low rpm up to 2500-3000 rpm. After 500 miles, change oil and filter and you're done. Not a big deal.

I've built a lot of engines for customers over the years most of them went well over 100k miles. on initial startup I run them at 2000 RPMs with no coolant until they get hot, kill it let it cool completely. Fill it with coolant give it to the customer tell them to drive it like your gonna drive it. and change the oil in 500 miles. I've lost count of how many engines I've done in the pass 25 years, but outside of one broken valve spring and few oil leaks I've not had one failure.
