My friend has a '95 chevy 1500 with a 350. I have a '94 bronco with a 302. Both are stock except for exhaust. He has duals that split a the converter. My bronco is just cut off after the converter. He has glasspacks and tips. Would I have a chance in a race?
Hello- Welcome to FTE! I have moved your post to the specialized forum we have here for your question. Check out the list of tech forums we have here. There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!
As far as a race, -not unless his engine is very sick.
There are other things that figure into the equation other than simply engine size, e.g., gear ratio, transmission type, tire size, condition of the engine/drivetrain, etc. Now having said that, no, you don't have a chance.
What are somethings i could upgrade or change to have a chance????
Well, how about engine size, e.g., gear ratio, transmission type, tire size, condition of the engine/drivetrain, etc.? Specifically, a 351W (in which case you'd have to swap the ECM), a manual tranny, stock tires (rather than fat off-road tires), higher gear ratio (say 4.10 or thereabout) and maybe a chip, assuming they make them for fifth generation Broncos. This will cost you roughly an arm and a leg. The single biggest hurdle you face is that you're giving up 48 cubes to him. It has often been said that there is no replacement for displacement.
Having said that, if he has a faster truck, so be it. Just swallow your pride and accept it. Much cheaper than any mod to make your truck faster. Or try to find a match you can win, maybe a tug-of-war.
If you really want to beat this chevy 350 you must trim a little weight, say about 3000 pounds. The 302 does not like weight. My experience tells me that 2800lbs. is the MAX if you want to do any racing and the closer you can get to zero lbs the better. The bore/stroke of this motor makes it a high reving engine with not much bottom-end grunt, and weight/gearing must be such to allow it to build revs quickly if you want to win any races.Don't get me wrong here, the 302 is my favorite motor, you can get big horsepower out of them and they are the best sounding engine come to out of Detroit. So if you have to beat this chevy and can't loss 3000 lbs, slap it 4x4 and take him to the muddiest road you can find.
One of my dad's friends wants to race me with his 77 4x4 jimmy w/ a 400 small block, I keep telling him to bring it out to the mud drags, but he don't want to get it dirty.
Will probably depend on the tires on who wins in the mud. The Chevy does have one big advantage over the Ford when going in the deep mud, it doesn't have a low hanging front differential to plow through the ground and slow you down
