I have a 1969 F250 w/360. Drove it about 11 miles the other morning and stopped for about 10 mins. When I tried to start it it wouldn't. Finally did get it to start but it would not run unless I have the gas pedal all the way to the floor then it would just barely run and sputter. I checked and was getting plenty of gas in carb and spark from coil. Pulled a plug and was getting spark there also. I fired it up again and it ran a little better and I made it home. I checked the timing and it was firing at 18 BTDC. When I tried to advance it closer to TDC the engine would die and backfire through the carb. I have changed the plugs, the wires, the distributor cap, the points (set at .017), and condensor. Still will not run unless gas pedal is all the way to the floor and backfires through the carb and timing will not advance past 18 BDTC. I did a compression test and got 110 - 115 psi on all cylinders.
I am thinking that the timing chain jumped a tooth but am looking for any suggestions before I pull the timing cover.
Rickey, it is possible that you jumped a tooth, and also possible that it is just stretched out very badly. Get a new chain and gears. I used a cloyes 3012 on one of my FEs recently. Check to make sure that you don't have a japanese chain when you get you new one, I have seen a lot of lower priced timing sets come with imported chains, which seem to stretch much faster than USA or Canada stuff. I think some of the foriegn manufacturers don't heat treat as well. Next, get rid of those points! A Pertronics Ignitor is a drop in replacement and you never have to set them again. You might be surprized at how well the old truck runs with a little work, and not too much cash. DF
