Rock and Blues guitar are the staples of my music diet. I live for that stuff. John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Stevie Ray, Robert Cray, Gary Moore, Neal Schon etc. Being from Austin, I get to see plenty of lesser known guitar gurus as well. A couple local names to check out: Monte Montgomery, Del Castillo, Eric Tessmer
But recently, my yahoo Launchcast station intoduced me to Vinnie Moore. If you like wicked fast guitar work, check out Vinnie moore. I can't believe I had not heard of him until recently!
Awsome! You and I have very similar interests in music. I come from classic rock, found myself really into blues rock guitar - same guys you mention. I find that blues is the only form of music where I can hear songs for the first time and often, instantly like em.
I recently ripped my 200+ CD collection to MP3's that I can play in my portable MP3 player, MP3 CD's in my truck or home stereo, and of course on three computers we have. 2500+ songs.
I'm planning of digging deeper into the blues and look forward to checking out your suggestions. I love good guitar work. I seem to go for guys who do the lead guitar/vocals thing like Hendrix, SRV, Kenny Wayne Sheppherd, ZZ Top, Clapton, Nugent, etc.
A lot of my favorites are singer/players. I think it's easier to get in a groove with yourself :-) throw in a top-notch rythym section like Double Trouble, and then you're cooking. Double trouble was playing every tuesday night at Antones for Janurary. They would have a variety of planned and unplanned guests. It's amazing who shows up to jam wth arguably the best blues/rock Rythym Section in the world. Unfortunately, I work tuesday nights :-( here are some web-site for those local guitar gods..all have music on the web site! Enjoy. I think you guitar fans will agree, I'm a bit spoiled to live in Austin most of my life :-)
If you guys have never seen Kenny Wayne Shepherd play, you are missing one of the most talented blues/rock guitarists ever. I was completely blown away at his show.
I also picked up a Bonnaroo '04 DVD the other day that has an incredible blues song on it by Los Lonely Boys. I had no idea those guys could play the blues, but it's one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard from a three piece. I can only imagine what it was like being at that show.
I'll never forget hearing Clapton talk about driving down the highway somewhere in the US, and hearing this song come on the radio... He said he had to pull over because he couldn't focus on driving, he was blown away. Get that? Eric Clapton, "guitar god", blown away.
It was SRV. Clapton tells the story in that SRV tribute video. I regret the loss of many talented individuals "before thier time" over the years, some even before my time. But it's especially tough about Stevie Ray. Hendrix was certainly a tragic loss for us blues rock guitar fans, but he kinda did it to himself. Stevie almost drank himself to death but snapped out of it. Only to have a mountain jump out in front of the chopper he was just a passenger in. He sooooo didn't have it coming.
You know that SRV was a Hendrix fan right? Hendrix and Clapton were good friends. Did you know that Hendrix was a ZZ Top fan?

www.delcastillomusic.com two brothers playing wicke latin rock licks with and against each other, on nylon string acoustic guitars..simply amazing
http://www.montemontgomery.com/ unique and powerful, difficult to describe.. Maybe a Mark Knopfler type. incredible small room live shows.
I didn't think anyone heard of this guy!
He's unbelievable!
We have his live album Catus Cafe I believe is where he is playing. There's a version he plays of Dire Straits- "Romeo and Juliet" it'll make you cry if you're a real fan of musicianship.
If you do not have it check it out!!! Highly recommended.

just for clarification, I believe she is referring to Monte here....
Monte is an incredible talent, a phenomenal guitar player, a good singer and a great songwriter. But, he absolutely insists on doing things his way, so he won't sign with the big labels. Try to find the song "Took Too Long" in the original driving electric format, not the later more subdued acoustic version he has on his website. That song is a real gem, and got significant radio time here in Austin. I consider it comparable to Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover".
Thanks for the tip! Sounds like you all have some great taste in music. I too am a guitfiddlist, so I can relate. My favorite stuff to cut loose with is the good ol blues guitar.
Where can I find a sample of Monte's stuff? On line maybe, or another source?

see the link in my previous post.... monte tends towards the more rock oriented stuff. if you want to hear the smoking blues stuff, check out the Eric Tessmer link (it will automatically start plaing tunes. the 3rd track(you can fast forward) that plays is my favorite. It's an instrumental that is just plain fun.)
A co-worker friend turned me on to this guy Robben Ford. (has a catchy name too)
Rock & blues guitarist with a pinch of jazz. He sings pretty good too. Caught him in Santa Cruz last summer in a very small venue. Killer show. Check him out if you have the chance. www.robbenford.com
