Your lucky on that upgrade instead of installing a Bendix. Disregard all the above reply on Bendix. There is no external way to adjust or balance, you have to remove the valve housing. Under the housing is a centering shim, different thickness shims adjust. You need to install on the high pressure side a 0-2000 psi gauge. With a in/lbs torque wrench on the steering wheel nut turn both directions untill you have 250 psi and note the torque readings, they should be less than 4 in /lbs difference. If not you have to change that shim thickness. I do not know how thick or thin the shim increment steps come in. This would be a question for a box rebuilder or have them set it up on a test bench, they would insist on a total rebuild, a liability thing. For the sector shaft adjustment for over center where the tight spot is straight ahead you want 11-12 in/lbs resistance higher than off center or side loose readings. Hope this helped.

It would be hard to find a NIB Ford box that old, if availabe they would ask $600 for it I'd bet. You may have a good box internally without wear just not balanced. I would have a large reputable rebuilder go thru it to make sure everythings good inside and not damaged or worn. They will reseal and balance, then you'll be good for another 20 years. I converted the 68 from Bendix to Ford box, after finding alot of junk boxes in Pick-N-Pulls I purchased a rebuilt from Meridian. I took it apart and everything was like new inside, I trust no one. Now I have a good spare from Pick-N-Pull that's good inside, all that's needed is a seal kit. With all the time and labor you want it done right.
A old truck with tight suspension and steering system is a joy to drive, there are a lot of beaters still running with 4" steering wheel play out there.
