I searched this forum and found that the 292 has a top oiling issue and potential weak crankshaft. Are there any other issues with the 292 to watch for?? Is there something I can do to protect the crankshaft?? What are general thoughts on the engine?
For reference, my 292 purrs like a kitten (well, it will once the exhaust leak is fixed...sounds like a kitten with a furball right now). I don't know if it has been rebuilt, but I like it. I like the feel of the truck the way it was off the lot in 1964, and would like to keep it as original as possible. Of course, I want to avoid the feeling of sitting on the side of the road waiting for AAA. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
don't worry about the crank, under normal conditions they will run forever, I read in here somewhere that someone says they are a problem..I don't buy it, I've run the heck out of more than a few 292's, raced a few in the early sixties and never experienced a problem..just look at how many have servived this long..IMHO
The 292 is a stout engine. Look at how many of them are still around four decades later. The only issue I've had with mine is changing the valve seats to hardened ones b/c of the unleaded gas. Other that than she runs like a top.
Me and my brother gave my dads 64 ..292. a real endurence test every time we drove it . I regret it now. You know teenagers. That truck had the best power and would rev like crazy. It took alot of abuse , burning the tires off almost every start. It still ran good at 130,000 miles but rear seal finally started pouring , replaced seals ..still poured. I think they make improved seals now but that was a motor I will never forget and hope to have another someday..Going to try to find a 64 shortbed with 292 as soon as my 66 ,352 sb is complete.
Thanks, guys...that makes me feel a whole lot better. My exhast manifold has been cracked since I got it. I have been dying to know how smooth the engine is without that leak noising up the works. I brazed the manifold this weekend, and it sounds sooooooo good now. Now the hairball is coughed up, she does purr like a kitten.
What about the top oiling problems...would you guys suggest a kit or just keep an eye on it?
So far i have had good luck with my 292. it is in a 54 but still a 292. Mine has a 4bbl and the cross over pipe is off. But besides that it was rebuilt back in the 70's then ran some. sat for 7-8 years, put a new coil and fuel pump in and beside the leaking accl pump ran like a top. i had to change some gaskets, tune up and then put the 4bbl on it. except for my wp taking a dump i have not had any problems. runs good. and if it is adjusted right and depending on exh, you can barley hear my motor run. Keep you valves addjusted. this took a little time the first time but i think it will get easyer as it goes.
Top oiling problems: Clean out the oil system - drop the pan, run diesel through it, etc. There was a thread on this not long ago in either this forum or the Y-Block Forum. Adding a top oiler system can starve the bottom end (so I have heard) so be careful.
