Another weird problem with the Ranger (97 4x2 SuperCab XLT, 2.3, 5 Speed). The last little while, there is a squeaking noise when I depress the clutch petal. It's almost a honking sound. It seems to be getting worse instead of better. What in the world is it?
My first thought would be a cable, but since this has a hydraulic clutch, I'm a little stumped. The sound *seems* to be coming from outside the cab, either through the firewall or the bell housing area. They're close together, so I'm not completely sure.
Hey man I have the exact same issue> my truck is also a 97' with the 4.0L. Its coming from the throwout bearing area. I took off the peep cover. I don't know what exactly it is but I still have a used vehicle warranty so I'm gonna get it checked out. My trucks had a new clutch put in it before so I don't know if its a 97' thing or not. Theres a spring in there with the throwout bearing, I almost think that thats whats doing it.
Oddly, mine seems to come and go, and I think temperature is sometimes a factor. For example, yesterday it honked all day, but this morning when I was on my way to work, I never heard a peep. It was colder this morning than yesterday, so who knows.
Check to make sure your pushrod that goes from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder is not sliding against the sleeve that goes thru the firewall. That was my problem. The rod was just about unscrewed from the pedal and was very crooked. Straigtened it back up and it was much better.

That sounds like a very likely source! I can hardly wait to go look at it. I'll let you guys know what I find.
