Spacer removal?

I am trying to get the timing cover off my 72 429. No problem with the pullies or harmonic balancer however I can't see how the spacer comes out. It slides back and forward but it appears that I need to rotate the spacer 180 degrees to line up with the notch. I cannot get it to spin in line with this notch. What am I missing here?

I had the same problem so I think I know what your talking about. That nipple that the notch looks like it should go through actually comes out , but for goodness sake don't loose it. Take a screw driver or something like it and tap on one side of it. It is shaped like a half moon. Once you get the "key" out of the way the spacer comes right off as well as your timing cover. Let me know how it turns out.
