Hey, your right. I went to www.partsamerica.com, and plugged in a f250 with a 390, and it has a green module.

Do you guys have any reference material or a website where they talk about the different colors and what they actually do? I am out of the loop on the different module colors.

The Lonerangerxlt posted "pappystoys.com" as well Fordgashog390, i'd say with both you'll have all the information needed. This has been a learning thread for me also, ask and they will answer.

THe links are dead. Can anybody help explain the grommet colors of the Duraspark II ignition module grommets (green, brown, blue, red, white, yellow)?

Brown was EEC III computer controlled California module.
Yellow was a High-altitude emissions with three plugs, third plug was for Spark Retard Input.
Blue was 49 states DS II.
Black and Green was DS I and had a blue wire going into the module.

DuraSpark I and III are the systems used in California V8's only. Basically, the only difference between the two is that the coil charging currents are higher in the California vehicles. This is necessary to fire the leaner fuel/air mixtures required by California's stricter emission laws. The difference in coils alters some of the test values.
DuraSpark I was used in 1974 and 1975 in California.
In 1976, the blue wire to the module was dropped when the zener diode was added to the module.

My chart says:
COLOR…………………...........YEAR..…..OEM #………Echlin #….Module Type
Black Grommet =………….....1974…...DY157……...TP35…………..F1
Green Grommet =…………....1975…….DY166……...TP36…………..F1
Blue Grommet =………….....1976-83..DY184ABC..TP40…………..F1
Red Grommet =……………...1979-83..DY204……...TP39…….…….F3
Yellow Double Grommet =.1979-81..DY237……...TP41…….……F5
Brown Grommet =………....1979-81...DY249A…….TP42……….…F2
White Grommet =…………...1980-83..DY250………TP43…………..F4

Thanks much that really helps! I got a new red grommet module. So to use this module I have NO ballast resistor and a coil with .71 to .77 ohms primary side and 7350 to 9300 secondary side. Will I get more volts if I use the hire secondary side coil?

If you want reliability and long life from the system, I would not monkey with mismatching coils and modules.

I don't want to mis-match stuff, but I think what I posted is the correct application for the red grommet Duraspark I system. Is this correct?

You are right that the Red grommet module does not use a ballast resistor.
I do not have any information as to what the resistance is on the "Low Resistance Coil" that is used with this DS I system. As I understand it this coil will give a higher voltage to fire the leaner fuel/air mixtures required by California's stricter emission laws. The Red grommet module is a California only system (DS I).

Resistance of the coil windings has nothing to do with what voltage it puts out, this is determined by the turn ratio between the primary and secondary windings of the coil. With that said the "Low Resistance Coil" more than likely has a ratio to put out a higher voltage.

The diagram in the link below is for a DS I red grommet system, where it shows the ballast resister just take it out of the diagram in your head.
