My 03 has a Super Chips program installed on the "tow safe" mode. Was pulling my toy hauler up an 8 mile long hill and the temp gauge stayed at the "normal" level for the first 6 miles, then in a 30 second span, it all of a sudden went into the yellow range. Stayed there for the last 2 miles...checked the dipstick at the top of the hill and it was real warm but not that warm that you couldn't keep your fingers on it...the oil was the same and it didn't smell "burnt". Had the transmisson in drive, out of overdrive, 2200 rpm's and 50 mph. It pulled it with ease and I would have never thought that it should have done what it did in this short 30 second time frame. Do you suppose that this was a sensor "fluke" or the real thing? Pulled this hill 3 times and it did it twice. Checked dipstick on normal pull and it felt the same. Any of you ever had this happen to you?
I know that the factury gauge is not the most reliable but have done this pull many of times and the gauge has NEVER done this! Concerned about the "quickness" of the gauge going this high in the short 30 second time frame. Any ideas? Might add that transmisson still works ok since this.

What's your mileage? All stock tranny? If plates are wearing out this generates more heat. Do u have a shift kit?
Nut
73,000 miles...all stock transmisson...no shift kit....and transmisson was flushed when I bought the truck from the dealer 20k ago. Owned this truck for 18 months now and have not had any transmisson problems at all. Took this truck on same trip 12 months ago and pulled same hill with no fluckuation on transmisson gauge.
you should probably get a good set of guages anyway because you are adding power. with a trans guage you would know how hot it is actually getting. i dont know where the yellow is temp wise
Ditto on gauges, you can tell so much more with them. From what I have gathered the stock tran gauge is like a slow idiot light, all normal until bad, when bad it just does exactly as you stated. I recommend a shift kit and a cooler, all can be had for about 160 or so, will definately improve the performance of the tranny.
What is a normal tranny temp for towing, and in town driving? Mine never goes above 150, except for yesterday. I was driving in town, and looked at my temp gauge it was at 230. Just wondering what a good temp is supposed to be.

That is what mine was before I put in a tranny cooler and a shift kit. Driving in stop and go traffic where the T/C wouldn't lock up created the most heat. Don't remember seeing 230 but do know t was up around 220.
