i have a '79f150 custom, i just recently bought it. the engine is so cluttered with that damn black enclosed air cleaner with the nozzle and all kinds of things coming out of it. can i just take this all off and get a round style kn filter or something to sit on top of the carb? would this hurt anything or help anything? thanks,
jesse
You can take it off....but you will disable some/or all of the emissions equipment. So it depends on your view on the environment and the applicable provincial/state laws, depending on where you live.
The truck will run happily without any emissions stuff, and the K&N system will let it breathe better
If you don't mind a little rough running in the cold weather, all you really need for vaccuum lines are the lines to the auto tranny modulator, brake booster and vaccuum advance to the distributor.
However you will be removing the entire emissions control system.
Your call.
There isn't really anything in the air cleaner that effects emmission except the warm air ducting. You can relocate the PCV filter and any "sensors" to the new cleaner.

Right you are Beartracks. I misunderstood the question.... oopps
I thought he wanted to remove all the vaccuum hoses and emission "clutter" and the big air cleaner.
I stand corrected.
What emisions crap can be removed to make my engine compartment clutter free. I have a 1979 F100, 351M, 2WD. When I open the hood all I see are vacuum lines, a big air cleaner and a big hose coming off the manifold into a cylinder looking thing into some sort of smog pump that hasn't had a belt going to it since I have owned the truck.
What can be done to increase gas mileage and get rid of all the clutter? Is it even possible?
To me, less vacuum lines, smog crap and a better breathing air cleaner would be the way to go.
To tell the truth the factory air cleaner with the fresh air duct intact leading to the hole in the core support is great. I still have mine on my 302, rams air into it pretty good when going down the road.
If you do much driving at night take a look inside the air cleaner bet you will see alot of bugs that have been sucked up into there. Mine does.
If all you have is an EGR valve and it is hooked up and working leave it be, its not hurting gas milage.
I don't want to start a big debate here but I think K&N air filters belong in the trash along with Fram oil filters. Stick a purolator air filter in there.
Oh and an engine that was built to run with egr will not be all that "happy" to run without it. Can cause pinging/detonation. Distributer will need to be recurved.
Which vacuum lines can I get rid of and what about the smog pump?
If you want to remove all of your smog equipment, i.e. clutter, you'll end up with only a couple of vacuum lines, and it will be much more tidey under the hood. Mine runs great without all of it. And of course since I'm in OK, we don't have any tree huggin' laws about ripping it out...
If you want to go this route, you'll want to remove or plug the EGR at the carb. Yank out your smog can and anything tied to it. I only have:
A) Vac advance from dizzy to carb (single or dual, depending on what you have)
B) PCV from the valve cover to the carb
C) Brake Vac line that ties into the carb
D) Transmission Vac, I T'd it into the brake vac line.
BTW, Most air cleaner aftermarket setups have a provision for PCV connecting on the underside of the air filter pan. You can bust out the knock out, add the nipple and go.
Going to an aftermarket cleaner also.not sure which type yet.
I don't know if the oiled filters would make a difference, I'm still running paper Edelbrock for now. Figured they sell me an oil filter to use if it would help.
I have a 79 302 with aftermarket air cleaner and my 73 302 has the factory air cleaner all hooked up and it breaths much better than the aftermarket one.
K&N flows better b/c it lets in more dirt. I don't want to step on anybodys toes, its just my opinion, me and most of my friends think they are junk. Purolator will be all I ever run.
