engine compartment clutter
Like the K&N filters, but in the factory cleaners only! Leaving air filter elements exposed to the elements like in the typical chrome breather to me is not wise. looks cool, but not real serviceable. Just like the poster said with the bugs, something around the filter is best to protect the filter and engine. K&N filter meant an honest 1.5 mpg on my last truck, dont have one for the new one as yet.
The warm air tube in most trucks is likely gone, but i think makes the truck far more driveable in cold weather.
EGR is a combustion burn temperature issue. It is used to keep combustion temps at an optimum temp for emissions during the burn process. Problem is that they sometimes dump too much eg into the cylinders and can actually cause leaning problems. Most egr setups back in the 70-80s got a small ball bearing shoved into the vacuum line that effectively cut the egr valve out of the equation. The egr passages often clog up and become ineffective anyway due to oil burn or carbon buildup. Nuclear weapons wont open one up once clogged in the manifold. So even if the valve is working, probably less then 20% of the older trucks still work, the passage way may be clogged anyway and effectively doing nothing. I would just use the ball bearing and move on. The effect of the egr valve is neglible except for those living in emissions testing states. The plate used for the egr does serve one purpose however and i would not remove it unless you know what you are doing. It insulates the carb from the eg/manifold heat even when egr is disabled.
Any truck with a new manifold (edelbrock, holley, etc) or with new manifold gaskets probably got the egr ports blocked anyway unless you live in an emissions testing state.
