I have a 1999 F-250 V-10 CC Auto. I pull a 38" trailer that carries crew boats. The whole thing loaded weighs about 8,000#. I had a Kelsey Hayes model brake controller from 1999, but now I mounded a CB in the spot under the dash cubby. Is there a good controller that I can tuck under the dash somewhere and not have to touch after it is setup? I manually activated the trailer brakes a lot with the one I used before.
The best option is the Prodigy. I bought mine at Rvwholesalers.com and it has been great. It is by far the most popular among people who tow RVs. It is around $100 and worth every penny. It is a set and forget controller.
Absolute best is the Brakesmart. If you don't need something of that caliber or price range the Prodigy is the next best you can get and will do a fine job.
Teconsha Prodigy. It comes with a plastic mounting holster kind of gizmo. When the controller is inserted into this holster arrangement, it is just the right size to fit into the dash cubby of the old body style trucks with room to spare on the side for your wallet or cell phone etc. Don't know if your cubby hole is the same size or not. You still have access to the manual lever with this arrangement and it's easier to reach than when mounted under the dash.
I just drilled a hole in the back of the cubby for the wire to run through and left the old controller that was in the truck when I bought it mounted under the dash as a back up.
The prodigy works very well and has a self diagnostic mode. They offer ready made custom cords for your application for around $10.00 or you can splice the included pig tail to the pig tail that came with your truck. If you choose to roll your own, beware that thecolor codes don't match directly and be sure to follow the directions for matching in the manual.
I have my Prodigys installed the same way, Gene. They fit pretty nicley in there to. My 94 and 04 Ford both have the same pocket in the dash. And when I put a Brakesmart on my truck I only had to do a little cutting on the back of the pocket with a hot knife to get everything to fit
It's like it was made to work that way isn't it? Hmmmm.
If someone didn't want to cut the small hole in the rear of that compartment, it will also work by letting the wire return out of the front of the compartment and then down and under the dash to the plug. Not very neat, but a workable temporary solution. The hole is no big deal though and can't be seen, even with the controller removed. A piece of duct tape over the back side would make the hole go away in the future if needs should change.
No attachment is necessary. When the controller is in the plastic mount that comes with it, sort of a holster arrangement, it fits snuggly in the cubby and doesn't move. couldn't be easier. A few wire ties on the cable are all that is needed.
