Code P1443

For the first time since I've owned my 97 Ranger 2.3, I got a CEL this morning at startup. Took it over to AutoZone and the machine spit out code P1443. From doing a little internet research, it seems that this is an evaporative emissions code of some sort. There are no drivability issues related to this CEL so far. I cleared the codes and drove the truck another 15 miles since, including two start cycles, without the CEL reappearing.

I've had the dreaded leaking fuel filler hose since I got the truck, and I'm thinking that the code is caused by that. The only thing is, from what googling I've done, it seems that it's often caused by a thermister or purge valve or somesuch.

I'm actually scheduled at a small town Ford dealer to get the filler hose replaced in March. Do any of you have experience with this code? Do you think it's related to the hose? If so, I guess I just need to wait until after the hose replacement and see what happens.

Thanks!

If I gave the impression that I hadn't searched the forum archives, forgive me. I've already read the thread you've pasted, and others. There is some somewhat conflicting information about what could cause this code. In your post stamped "09-15-2003, 08:35 PM," in the above-mentioned thread, the fuel hose is not listed as a possible cause of this code. However, in other threads about the same code, the fuel hose is listed as a possible cause.

I've asked my question to try to determine if in can indeed rule out my bad filler hose as the source of this code. I already know the hose is bad, because the thing leaks when I fill it up, and I can smell fuel vapors a lot of the time when I get out of the truck. I can also see the residue of the leak. It would be stupid of me to replace the parts you listed in that thread if the cause of the code might be the part I already know needs replaced.

Maybe I need to restate the question like this: Is anyone sure I can rule out the leaky fuel hose as a potential cause of this code? If not, it seems to me that I need to wait until the hose is replaced so I can rule it out.
