I was under the hood the other day checking fluids and noticed there was a sludgy substance in the bottom of the overflow bottle. Its a little darker than the coolant itself. I scraped a little off w/ a screwdriver and it is just kinda sludgy. The truck is bone stock 2005, never a tune, w/ 2000 miles. Anyone else seen this. My buddy said it could be oil. I checked my oil dipstick for antifreeze on it but I couldn't tell. The oil was awefully clear though. Anyways, I have an appt at Ford tomorrow for the 35 reflash anyways so I'm going to have them look at it then, in the meantime, any ideas??????
Yeah, that stuff comes stock from the factory. Probably what's left over from the block casting, my 03 and many others have it. I pulled the degas bottle off and wash it out a couple years ago and the stuff has never returned.
OK, I was hoping it might be something like that. I'm still gonna show it to ford today when I take it in for the reflash, I'm curious what they will say.
Yes, I think it is leftover casting sand from the block. Recomended on industrial engines to use a coolant filter. Sponsors have em. they say the first one clogs fast and then after that you can change less often.
The coolant filter is an excellent way to clean out the casting sand that is running through the engine. Take a look at the photo gallery of Beachbumcook, he has excellent pictures of the coolant filter after it was cut open. It shows how much of the sand is floating through the motor. I installed one on my truck and it was very simple to do. I have only changed the filter once, and I see no trace of the sand in the de-gas bottle since the install.
You guys were right once again, who needs a dealership w/ FTE!!! They signed off the coolant problem as "Called hotline. Run Oasis. Normal hotline report 6a5b5006". They said they seen this on a lot of them. I asked why they don't flush it and they said cause it usually all doesn't come out anyways, and Ford says it won't cause any problems. Got the reflash done too, does seem to be a little sluggish when cold. Thanks though guys for the info!
Check out my gallery as I have posted pics of my coolant filter and what the filter looked like at only a few miles.
I installed it at 50,000 miles and did a total coolant flush with distilled water and premium gold coolant (factory coolant)... and I still got all this sand in my coolant filter.
