I have a 74 F-350 with a 360 in it and I was wandering what pound radiator cap I should use. the truck tends to run hot while idling(which it does much of around the farm). I have a 160 deg. t-stat in it. would the pressure cap affect it any.
P.S. The truck doesn't have an overflow container.
Doctor, that model used a pressure cap of about 14 lbs. The cap holds the coolant under pressure and raises the boiling point. It dosen't actually lower the temperature, just raises the boiling point. If the truck is boiling over, then a new cap will help, if your old one isn't holding pressure. A quick check is to put a hose on the overflow tube, blow into it, and see if the cap is holding pressure.
An overflow catch bottle is a good idea. If you install one, make sure you get a cap that seals the smaller inside lip of the radiator, and also the larger top lip. Both lips must seal for the coolant to be drawn back into the radiator when it cools. Sometimes you can bend the cap holding tangs, to get a cap to seal right.
