I have replaced the single wheel rear axle on my Ford Transit R.V. with a dual wheel rear axle.
The single rear axle had a diff ratio of 3.89/1
The dual wheel rear axle has a diff ratio 4.63/1
What difference does this make to my R.V. ?
How can I obtain a similiar or lower ratio similiar to my previous 3.89/1 bearing in mind that replacement parts are extremely difficult for my model FORD TRANSIT?
No it's not too tough but it is pretty stupid to ask a question then dis the same people you're asking.
By putting a numerically higher ratio rear end in your TRANSIT you are going to wind the engine higher to go the same speed you did with the lower gears. The only thing you can do is install an over-drive tranny or put on significantly larger tires. Is that concise enough for you?
I'm not too familier with RV rearends but on the trucks which may be the same if it has the same model axle there is no difference between the dual and single rear wheels except for the larger and longer wheel studs. You may be able to swap your original gears into your new axle and get off easy. Good luck Greg NE
I had considered that as a remote possibility, but as one set of "axles" are full floating and the other semi-floating have somehow thought that they would not interchange as readily as one would like or hope for.
It is because of these uncertanties I have posted my enquiry in the anticipation that some more knlowlegable folk can steer me into optional alternatives.
I have had the suggestion of changing tyre sizes but this is extremely prohibitive due to our stringent regulations.
Thanks Bill,

You are absolutely correct...this is what I've found..higher revs and presumably more gas.
You also said......"The only thing you can do is install an over-drive tranny"
Could you please explain what you mean by this statement...
