I have the MBRP turbo back cool duals with 6 inch tips and the cat-delete pip. All I can say is that i noticed a little bit more power and lower EGT's and you can hear the turbo spool up which sounds nice.
wedensday I installed a Banks Monster exaust turbo back. other than a hard time removing the old turbo outlet pipe, it was a prity simple install. the engine actualy sounds quiter, you can hear the turbo spool up and the power comes on quicker, the rear tires break loose easer
I have a Turbo Back 4inch kit from Bullydog and it comes with enough to delete cat and muffler(atleast on mine being a Scab and short bed). We just added the MBRP line to our store this weekend and ofcourse we will price match. Look at it this way. If your garden hose was 50 feet long and the first 5 feet of it was 1/4 inch would you get anymore out of it? Yes with a free flow muffler and bigger tail pipe it will sound better. The best way to lower EGT's is better air flow in and out of the motor. The faster you can get the air (force it into the engine) and the faster you can get rid of it. (blow it out the exhaust) the better performance you will have. In my opinion. Im sure someone will say Im wrong, but In any competative drag race or truck pull the first thing that goes is the muffler. Plus loud pipes save lives.
Cat back is good, much better than stock, but turbo back is approx 25-50 degrees cooler on EGT's and the turbo spools up much faster too! Sound wise the cat back will muffle a little bit of the turbo whistle with the stock down pipe, if you get a turbo back and test pipe for the cat the turbo whistle really wakes up. The 2003's will really whistle with the 2004's bening slightly less and the 2005+ being even less as Ford has changed the turbo wheels to reduce NVH for non disesl whislte lovers like most of us! The exhaust note on a turbo back isn't really louder, but has a deeper tone overall. The MBRP system sare the only ones that I am aware of that have the function to bolt in the stock converter (CAT) totally stock with NO mods to the cat, it's also in the stock location, this helps keep warranty issue at bay. Plus we have a cat test pipe if you off road or race that bolts in with two bolts and one clamp etc. The system are available in aluminized, 409 and 304 stainless and also in duals if you want the MAX as far as looks too.
Call us if you have any questions we'll be glad to help.
I'd have bought the MBRP Turbo back had I known for sure that the pipes bolted to the stock cat flanges. Bullydog advertises that their system is a complete bolt in. -It is if you cut things and use clamps at the joints. (Granted, by cutting the cat it does provide for 4" in/out) Still, I'd rather have had the opportunity to reinstall the stock exhaust if need be.
I love the sound of the BullyDog, with cat, without muffler. A true 4" tube. But, the hastle of fitting the down tube at the firewall is without question a PITA. A 4" downpipe is very tight after the bend downward right at the horizontal firewall joint. Most of us don't own porta power/hydraulic contraptions that will push the firewall away from the engine. Crow bars and hammers get the job done, but if I were to do it all over again, I'd probably look for something that is a bit closer to 3 3/4" instead of 4". (at a very slight loss in in cooling/flow, but still better than stock.)
Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT, Ditch that CAT!!!!!!
Oops sorry the cheerleaders got carried away...........
We ditched the cat on our 2005 F-350 6.0 and its coming due for inspection soon. Guess what we have to do...put a cat back on the thing to pass the PA state visual.
If your state has a emissions visual, ........
DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT, DONT DITCH THE CAT!
Larry is right they want a cat inplace for the visual. Ofcourse you cant see inside the cat when its mounted. They dont put a sniffer in a diesel, they just want to see it. Im thinking we may find a used one or something and cut it in half wrap it around the pipe and weld it. Not sure. I can get it done without at other places. Not really that worried. Plus Larry loves to play with the new Plasma wrench down in the shop.
Why don't light-duty, diesel-powered vehicles have to get a Smog Check?
Inclusion of light-duty, diesel-fueled vehicles was considered during development of the Smog Check Program. It was determined that when compared to the nation's vehicle fleet as a whole, light-duty, diesel-fueled vehicles and trucks represent a small portion of the entire fleet, less than one percent. In addition, while particulates are visible in diesel exhaust, smog-causing carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from diesel-fueled vehicles are comparatively low. Testing for NOx (oxides of nitrogen) in diesel emissions is under evaluation. With light-duty diesel vehicles comprising less than one percent of the total number of California registered vehicles, the costs associated with implementing a new regulatory program to include these vehicles are currently prohibitive.
In 2007 or 2008 the 1-Ton and lower diesels WILL be smog vehicles. Buy your diesels now! Things are fixin to change in the diesel world in the next 2 years! As for today, you can bust the guts out of your cat and there no way for them to fail you. Its a visual test, and unless you find one heck of a skinny mechanic, he is not going to fit his fat behind up your exhaust to put his eyes on your convertors guts. Its a non issue. Now, a gasser is a whole differant animal....they have to pass the sniff test. No convertor, no pass. Diesel.... hollow convertor.... all still looks good... you pass go and collect $200 (Monopoly referance)...
