Hi guys! First off, Ive searched the archives at length but haven't seen this particular question. I know now of the a4ld's reputation , but I've seen my share of tranny problems and never seen this. Turned a corner and BOOM (no noise) just no motivation forward or reverse. Was like something just turned the trans off. Any advice on things to check or just general info before I go to the (dreaded ) transmission shop? Please, I would like to tap into the extensive experience I know is out there. We may not be experts (?) but this just seems like less than total failure with it happening without warning , like no slipping etc. Sorry for the long post , I'm getting desparate here. Am also MISSING my favorite ride.
There are only a couple of things that would cause the trans to loose all drive abruptly like that. As ranger noted, the pump gears could have busted. To check and see if the pump is working, check the fluid with the engine off and note the level on the dip stick. With the engine off the level should be above the "full" mark. Next, start the motor and check the fluid again. If the pump is working it should pull the level down into the hash marks. If its still reading above full, the pump isn't pumping.
You could have also stripped the torque converter. No way to check this externally. You have to pull the trans and remove the torque converter to check it.
Most anything else broken in the driveline would give you drive in some gear. The ouput shaft can break but its rare even in an A4LD. To see if anything in the trans is trying to pull, start the engine and run it through all of the gears, L,2,3,OD,N,R and then select park. If you hear a grinding or clicking when going into park, you have broken something in the output or the rear end.
Steve , Thanks ever so much for your reply. This is exactly the kind of advice i was hoping for. You guys are great! I wonder , if it was totaled up < just how much this forum saves people in money not spent or at least approaching the shops blind as a bat! LOVE this place , and if it's not too un-manly, you helpful guys too!
