I used Herc on my previous truck... Ford Ranger (will never own one again, I love the F150). It worked out pretty well. The truck was brand new off the lot... the hardest part for me was scratching up all of that new paint! I used a palm sander and some fairly aggressive paper, and went over the whole bed. then I cleaned the bed with paint thinner ( I think). Masked off anything that I didn't want the Herc on, and layed down the first coat. I waited until the first coat was just barely tacky (not dry - the second coat will not stick if dry). Layed down the second coat, and let it dry overnight. (they recommend 4 hrs, if I recall correctly). I used 1 gal for a 6 foot bed, still had a bit left for touchups. For an 8 ft, I woul recommend 1 gal,1 quart.
Mine got scratched up in several spots. I am a machinery mechanic and I go to customer locations and repair equipment. My toolbox weighs 80 pounds, and I was constantly loading and unloading it. That's alot of weight to drag across any coating!
Fortunately, with Herc - you can just open up the can (if you've closed it tight enough) and dab a little on over the ares that have become damaged. I think that it looks alot better than the plastic liner, but it's not as durable, and I probably wouldn't go through the trouble twice... unless I was really bored. Hope this helps. If not, at least I could ramble aimlessly like my Grandpa for a while....
I used it on my 95. I had an over the rail plastic drop in liner, it was scuffing the paint so I took it out and coated anywhere the liner touched with 3 thick coats. That was under the rails, over the rails and the tailgate. Went on good and looked great. Since the drop in was still good it went back in, that means no tears on the Herc and no rust under the drop in.
